28 YEARS LATER.. AND HISTORY IS ALMOST REPEATING ITSELF....

It is a cloudy day today here in Cromwell, CT and with this I am reflecting and remembering a time 28 years ago.  Do any of you remember this?

Twenty eight years ago, Jimmy Carter was president.. which I am sure some of you remember.  Do you remember that there was "a shortage" on gas, and how we had to get gas on odd or even days depending on the last letter or number on our license plate? All political circumstances going on a well where Russia was invading Afghanistan, the US faced domestic inflation, unemployment, and economic uncertainty. Sound familiar?  it seems like history is repeating itself.. in a sense.

The one thing we had then, we do NOT have now, and I wish we did.

A group of 20 men changed the out look of this country and gave us hope.  I am speaking of the 1980 US Men's Olympic Hockey Team.  I had the opportunity to be in Lake Placid for these games, and still to this day I get chills on the back of my neck when I hear Al Michaels say "Do you believe in Miracles". It was the last olympics I truly enjoyed.  You had amateurs playing the sport then, not professionals as we do today.

The energy that was at the Ice Arena and in the small town of Lake Placid, NY that night when the U.S. beat the Soviets 4 to 3, I have never felt anywhere since.  They are great memories.

It might be 28 years later, but I still wish to say "Thank you" to Bill Baker, Neal Broten, Dave Christian, Steve Christoff, Jim Craig, Mike Eruzione, John Harrington, Steve Janaszak, Mark Johnson, Rob McClanahan, Ken Morrow, Jack O'Callahan, Mark Pavelich, Mike Ramsey, Buzz Schneider, Dave Silk, Eric Strobel, Bob Suter, Phil Verchota, Mark Wells along with Coaches Craig Patrick & the late Herb Brooks.  Thank you for the memories and giving back to this country what no one else could.. it's confidence.

Jo, Yes I have seen the movie "Miracle".. I also own 2 copies of it... one I bought, the other was a gift.  Gavin O'Connor (the director) did a good job.  There are 2 flaws in the movie.  One, when Craig Patrick (played by Noah Emmerick) called off the names of 26 players that made the team.. he never mentioned Mark Wells, or Neal Broten.. don't understand why.  Secondly, the actor that portrayed Ken Morrow should have had a beard as he did in 1980. Do you think I've seen the movie too much?  LOL.

Valerie I was not in Lake Placid 28 years ago, but I was glued to the front of my TV set and remember the win like it was today. And yes I agree it was a great moment and something that our country could use right now.

Valerie, that is too funny - there are some movies that you can watch over and over. I loved watching this one with my son's and explaining what it was like.

Jo... I thought you'd like to know something I just picked up in the movie... I saw it again last night.  When the US is playing against Russia in Madison Square Garden.  The center Mark Johnson can't look at the center for the Russians (Mikhailov), he seems intimadated... even when they play them in the finals of the olympics, he can't.. UNTIL the last period.  Then Mark stares him down.. This gave me another aspect of the movies I didnt' see before... Just an FYI.
