Beautiful family but she should have lived now, not then.

Dillard family 50's A Lovely Family

This lovely picture taken at some photographer's studio is a good image of the 50's.....somewhere around there anyway.  The proud parents stand with their two boys.  The boys, especially the smaller one, is probably wearing a home made outfit.  Note the pants with a very high hem for letting them out as he grew taller.  Also note the shirt with mismatched checks and a big wide collar and rolled up sleeves.    The seamstress was not expert.  And he has on two toned shoes.

The older son is more polished and probably was old enough to dictate what he would wear.  He loved cowboy items.

The dad has the shiny white forehead that comes from wearing a cap or hat all day while working and getting heavily tanned everywhere except the forehead.  This dad always wore cowboy outfits.  In fact, his nickname was "Cowboy."

Mom, the most lovely person, lived at the wrong time.  She always thought that she was fat.  She wore girdles, she tried to diet, and she hated her size.  If she lived now, she'd be just one of the crowd!  Maybe it was Mother's Day since she has on a flower corsage.

I loved this family.  They were related to me and they are now all passed on but seeing the pictures of them always brings a bit of pleasure.  I know you feel the same way about the old black and white pictures of your relatives.

Good morning Barbara. I too have many, many pictures of my family some going back a 100 years. I enjoyed your picture and speculations.

I grew up in Coolidge and knew this family well. My mama did Mrs. Doris' hair every week.

Kim, that is interesting.  I did not know Doris went to the beauty shop every week.  She was certainly a great cook....I remember that.

I remember a dear friend of my mothers would always give me a shirt for Christmas.....one she had made. It, too, had the wide (way too wide) collar....and I hated having to wear it. I was probably about 10 yrs. old.
