Humboldt County CA Homes tip - Use Coffee Grounds to Keep Pets Out of Your Garden and Flower Beds

It's Spring Time again and you know what that means.  It's time to get out there are do some Spring Cleaning.  Time to clean up your flower beds and vegetable gardens and get them ready for new growth!

But how do you keep those neighborhood cats from using your flower beds as their litter box?

How do you keep your dog from trampling all over your flowers, plants and shrubs in your backyard?

The Answer...      COFFEE GROUNDS   Starbucks Coffee

Our local Eureka California Starbucks gives this stuff away for free!  And not only does it keep those pesky pets out of your yard, it helps you nourish your plants too!  I live in a neighborhood where we have good number of cats, both strays and ones who have owners, who hang out near my house all the time.  Of course it doesn't help that one of my neighbors feeds the strays.  Oh well.  Last year, while doing some needed weeding, I would always grab onto some cat poop accidentally.  Thank goodness I wore gloves.  It's kind of gross.

So my husband and I started adding coffee grounds to our flower beds and viola, no more kitty litter flower beds for us.  Plus our flowers and roses looked healthier.  So guess what...we killed two birds with one stone.  We found a way to keep the local pet community out of our yard and help our plants grow healthier in the long run.

Keeping your Dog out of Your Flower BedsBenjamin

Another problem was Benjamin (my dog) and oh yes he is very cute, but also very destructive.  He had this ritual of walking the perimeter of our backyard every morning, (which is where my landscaped beds are located), trampling on every plant in site.  So my husband and I decided to try the coffee ground method and see if it made a difference.  We applied several bags of coffee grounds on all of our beds, and lo and behold it worked!

Benjamin is staying away from our flowerbeds.  Yeah!  Last year our perimeter beds looked like a war zone, this year they are lush green and beautiful!Backyard post Coffee Grounds

Other garden pet repellents:

Just like coffee grounds, I've heard that Cayenne Pepper can also help keep pets out of your garden and flower beds.  Just like coffee grounds cats and dogs don't like the smell or the taste (especially Cayenne--OUCH) when licking their paws clean.  So it's negative reinforcement for your pets.  They quickly learn that going in your flower beds becomes an unpleasant experience.

Edited:  Thanks Elizabeth for bringing this up - I wanted to mention that personally this has worked for me and Ben has not shown any signs of caffeine poisoning, but I would definitely check with your local vet - dogs can get sick from caffeine including coffee grounds (see Elizabeth's vet link in the comment section) just like they can if they eat enough chocolate.  So check with your vet first if your concerned.

Jessica - Thank You - Thank You!  I did not know this - I have 7 cats - 4 I own and 3 that just showed up one day.  They love to use my flower gardens and mulch beds - hey why can't they go a few more feet into the woods?  You bet I will use this advice!

Kathy - Hey I'm glad I could help.  Let me know how it goes and by the way...when you walk into Starbucks you'll usually see a pail/bin where they give away their coffee grounds, but you can also go to the counter and ask for their espresso coffee grounds.  Our Starbucks goes through a ton of espresso everyday so there usually is plenty available for your garden!

Hi Jessica - According to what I have read plants love coffee grounds because it puts out nitrogen.  Although according to http://www.thepetcenter.com/

it states the following:

Mothballs, potpourri oils, coffee grounds, homemade play dough, fabric softener sheets, dishwashing detergent, batteries, cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, pennies and hand and foot warmers could be dangerous for your pet.

Coffee grounds may still contain caffeine - just like chocolate - it can be lethal for a dog if enough is consumed.

Just a precaution I'd ask my vet first before putting any coffee grounds out that a dog might ingest.

I will try this but we live on a ranch and our animals smell and touch everything - even the coffee. I do put my grounds in the garden but have several coffee stores in our area including Starbucks. Maybe more is better - in this case.

This is SO TIMELY!!! My pups have destroyed my garden beds and I'm working with a landscaper to figure out what to do to keep them out! I'll definitely try this!

Paddy - Actually I thought those little buggers would just be tired and wired...LOL

Elizabeth - Thanks for pointing that out!  Good point.  Yes caffeine is definitely not good for dogs especially if they consume a decent amount (like raiding the box of chocolates).  I would suggest everyone check with their vet and of course monitor their pet.  I think if your worried about that then just put coffee grounds in your front yard flower beds only where your pet most likely spends very little or no time at all.  So far from my experience with Ben though, is it only took a couple of times walking in those beds with coffee grounds to keep him away on a consistent basis.  So I'm not too concerned when it comes to him getting an overdose of caffeine, because he's staying away from those perimeter flower beds.

Cindy - Your welcome.  I originally started using coffee grounds to help nourish my plants, but when my cat problem got out of control and I didn't want to get into a fight with my neighbor who was feeding every cat in the neighborhood (stray or not), I found that this was a better solution.

Kathleen - Try it,but like Elizabeth said, check with your vet and also monitor the situation.  This solution may not work for all pets.  It worked for mine, but there might be a few coffee loving dogs and cats who would walk all over this stuff and that of course is not good for your pet.  There might also be pets who are indifferent to coffee grounds and walk all over them.  So be careful...Cheers!

Jennifer - I thought you would like this one!  It's worked for me so far.  Hopefully your pets will hate the taste too and just stay out of those beds altogether.  Just monitor the situation.

People and plants love coffee and pets don't.  Could be a good mix to keep pets in a particular area.

Heath - So far it's been working for my dog Benjamin, he steers clear of the beds 100% of the time.

Patrice - Your welcome.  Let me know how it works out!

Okay, well, I tried the coffee grounds... and found several piles of coffee-colored poop in the yard... so, hmmmmm.... did they learn their lesson? Or do I have Starbuck's-addicted pups?

Jennifer - You probably have Starbucks addicted pups.  Boo Hoo.  Just keep an eye on them and see if you see any more in the next couple of days.  Bummer :(
