Waterway vs. Oceanfront

By

Here in Myrtle Beach, we are fortunate to have the Intracoastal Waterway as an alternative route for nautical transportation.  The ICW traverses the east coast of the United States from Texas to Main.  It is calm, has a tidal variation of between 2-5' depending on the location, and is home to various shops, restaurants, marinas, and easy outlets to the Atlantic Ocean.

One benefit to living on the ICW is that (at least in Myrtle Beach), it does not see the extreme weather that the oceanfront is subject to.  If a tropical storm or hurricane is approaching, the mandatory evacuation line is drawn at the ICW.  Those living to the west of the storm and not required to evacuate.

Properties located on the ICW are usually far less expensive than the oceanfront, as well.  And (most) homes constructed on the ICW don't require stilts or have to be raised, offering easier access to people who aren't fond of stairs.

One commonality between the ICW and the oceanfront is this very basic truth -- they aren't making any more of it.
