Queen Creek, Arizona

Since its incorporation on Sept. 5, 1989, the Town of Queen Creek has fulfilled residents’ dreams for the community. The Town has adopted several award-winning plans designed to guide future growth, planning and land use as well as provide amenities.

The Town has grown from rich rural roots to what is one of the most innovatively planned family friendly home towns in Arizona.

By the time Arizona became a state in 1912, a true community had been formed in Queen Creek. Residents established traditions of neighborliness and rural fun.

Growing up in Tempe in the 60's and 70's, all I really knew about Queen Creek back then was that it was a little town, way, way out east, where all the cowboys lived.  The population of Queen Creek back then was quite small.  In fact, Queen Creek didn't even have its first traffic signal until about 2001.

My how times have changed.....

Today, Queen Creek is home to over 34,000 residents with an expected growth rate of just under 3% per year.  Queen Creek offers a variety of shopping options including retail and dining options at Queen Creek Marketplace, the new QC District,  the Cornerstone at Queen Creek, Power Marketplace and Queen Creek Village. One of Arizona's newest shopping malls, San Tan Village, is just 15 minutes to the north.

Here are some Little Known Facts about Queen Creek:

  • The Town of Queen Creek's name originated over a hundred miles away. There is a creek that runs down from the mountains near superior, AZ, through the Queen Creek Canyon, into the area surrounding the present day Town of Queen Creek.  The town is named after that creek.

  • Before the community was called Queen Creek, it had a different name. The area was known as Rittenhouse because of the railroad spur located near Rittenhouse and Ellsworth roads. People used to flag down the train to get a ride into Phoenix.

  • During World War II, a prisoner of war (POW) camp was established on the north side of the railroad from 1942 to 1945. German POW’s were used for farm labor, and a doctor at the camp was known to have occasionally treated local residents.

  • Rittenhouse Air Force Base: One of five satellite airfields supporting Williams Field. This was the facility used for touch-and-go pilot training. It was located where Ocotillo Road intersects with Schnepf Road.

Community demographics provided by the US Census Bureau:

  • Percentage White: 86.9%

  • Percentage African American: 2.7%

  • Percentage Asian: 1.2%

  • Percentage Latino/a or Hispanic (of any race): 17.7%

  • Median age: 30.3

  • Median family income: $86,444
