The Kravis Center in West Palm Beach Brings Broadway to Florida

One of the many advantages of living in South Florida is that the performing arts flourish year round and provide patrons with entertainment from classical to rock, dance, opera and stage shows, including local-companies and fully mounted, Tony-Award-winning Broadway productions.

The Kravis Center in West Palm Beach is one of the major performing arts centers in South Florida and features four venues: the 2,195-seat Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. Concert Hall, the 289-seat Rinker Playhouse, the 170-seat Helen K. Persson Hall and the outdoor Michael and Andrew Gosman Amphitheatre with a capacity for 1,400 patrons. The Center’s Cohen Pavilion houses the Weiner Banquet Center, The Picower Foundation Arts Education Center and The Elmore Family Business Center for the Arts.

Over the past 23 years, The Kravis Center has grown to host more than 800 events annually and welcomed more than 500,000 patrons. To date, the Center also has provided opportunities to explore the arts to more than 2 million school children, as well as minorities and community groups. Many regionally based organizations call the Kravis Center home, including the Palm Beach Opera and the Miami City Ballet. The Kravis Center itself will present more than 400 events this year.

The Kravis Center also is one of the performing arts venues in South Florida that brings the best of the Great White Way to audiences and has announced its 2016-2017 Kravis on Broadway Season.

The winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Play, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time is making its Kravis Center debut from November 15-20, 2016. Hailed as “One of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway” by The New York Times, this production is adapted from Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel about a 15-year-old boy who has an extraordinary brain but is ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. Under suspicion of killing his neighbor’s dog, he sets out to identify the true culprit, and his quest changes his life forever.

The Tony-Award winning adaptation of the much-loved musical film classic An American in Paris (December 6 - 11, 2016) focuses on an American soldier and a mysterious French girl, each yearning for a new beginning after World War II. Set in the “City of Light,” it features unforgettable songs by George and Ira Gershwin. The New York Times raves, “An American in Paris is a triumph. Pure joy! . . . Once you’ve seen it, you’ll find it hard to settle for less ever again.”

From January 3 - 8, 2017, another movie classic adapted from the silver screen, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage, comes to life with heart-pounding music, sizzling romance and passionate dance. When 17-year-old Frances “Baby” Houseman goes on summer vacation with her family to New York’s Catskill Mountains, her life changes forever as she becomes resort star dancer Johnny’s leading lady both on- and off-stage. The smash hit features songs including “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” “Do You Love Me?” and the heart-stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life.”

Tony Award-winning Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (February 1 - 5, 2017) tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from her tumultuous on- and off-again relationship with husband and songwriting team partner Gerry Goffin, and her relationship with fellow songwriters Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to ultimately becoming one of the most successful solo stars in popular music history. The show features a full gamut of hit songs written by Goffin/ King and Mann/ Weil, including “I Feel the Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and the title song.

Cameron Mackintosh’s grand new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of The Opera (March 23 - April 1, 2017) premieres at the Kravis Center as part of a new North American Tour. This adaptation features brilliant new scenic design by Paul Brown, Tony Award-winning original costume design by Maria Björnson, lighting design by Tony Award-winner Paule Constable, new choreography by Scott Ambler, and new staging by director Laurence Connor. The heart-wrenching love story is bolstered by the phenomenal score with songs including “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You” and “Masquerade.”

From April 18 - 23, 2017, Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit Kinky Boots will take the stage featuring songs by Grammy- and Tony-winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper. This musical celebration, inspired by true events, takes the audience from a family-owned gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Along the way, the family learns that you can change the world when you open your mind to new ideas and friendships. With direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray) and a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles), Kinky Boots is the winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Score.

A new production of The Sound of Music, (March 9 - 14, 2017) tells the classic and true story of von Trapp family, who sang together and ultimately escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria. Once again, audiences will be charmed by its Tony, Grammy and Academy Award winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and the title song. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.
