Dear New REALTORS,

By
Real Estate Agent with Las Cruces Homes and Land

I know that getting started in real estate can be tough. Where to find your clients, how to offer them the best service, how to stay organized...the list goes on and on.

One thing you'll learn quickly is that there are a lot of products out there for you to buy - from on line lead gen, to scripts to making calls on expireds to...again. The list goes on and on.

I have AdBlock on my laptop which blocks ads on Facebook for me. I love it. However, I don't have something like that on my phone so when I'm on Facebook, these ads are relentless. I'm scrolling my phone right now and see:

*Software being used nationwide for CMA's - resulting in massive increases in business
*Say goodbye to Zillow (a line used over and over again) - from a lead gen company
*Ads from some of my favorite agents - hmmmm. Maybe I'm in their target age group
*Get million dollar scripts to win those FSBO and Expireds!
*Another CMA to increase business 10fold.

You get the idea. I've not heard of ONE of these companies being mentioned by any of my online network. I did a quick google of one company and I stopped counting after 10 one star reviews on different sites.

Look. I get it because I've been there - where do you get business? It sure isn't from a majority of these companies. Someone once said, "Want to make millions in real estate? Create a must have product and sell it to REALTORS."

If you're brand new, I sure hope you're with a brokerage that is offering you mentoring, classes, one on one guidance and more. If you are new and don't have that, I would highly suggest you find a company that will have all of this. It's not easy. I've been doing this for 7 years and I learn something new almost daily. I have my slumps, too, and all of those shiny promises on Facebook aren't going to do anything for me.

Please promise me that if you get intrigued by one of these ads, you'll do your research before you send them any money. Hit the Google, type in the company's name along with reviews and/or complaints. See what others have to say. Hit up your social media circles and ASK for opinions. Chances are there are at least 10 other agents who researched that company or even tried it.

Don't get distraced by shiny.  It only takes you off track and makes money leave your pocket.

Great advice. Wish someone told me this years ago. When your new (or even been around a while) I'm amazaed at just how much marketing of products or services are directed at REALTORS. Especialy the "I'll get you 1st page on Google" folks.

Forget just newbies, we realtors who have been doing this for a while, still also need to check things out.

Spot on, my friend. I have a good number of new and newer agents and the "shiny object" syndrome is hard to avoid. Great advice here. Of course, I would expect nothing less from you.  :)

Great advice. New Folks need to realize they have no idea what they need yet and can spend way to much on what they don't need

Emmary Simpson, there's no magic formula or a website for newbies or veteran agents, yet, these products sell.
I do not block other realtors, if I don't want to see their FB ads, I scroll down, that simple. We're in the people business, the more people we know, more homes we sell. I understand why real estate agents don't want to see ads from other agents but I don't think there's anything wrong with online or offline marketing. I'm pretty sure those who do market on/offline try their best to exclude real estate agents but sometimes, marketing pieces do end up in the hands of fellow agents.

What looks easy from the outside is really a lot of hard work, with no silver bullets, to guarantee success.  I think too often agents overlook the value of a broker who will run "air cover" for their agents ground game.

Emmary, I installed FireFox on my mobile phone with the adblocker addon.  Not only does this prevent those annoying ads, but I can now block the youtube ads as well (when viewed through the FF browser).  I've stopped using the youtube app!

But Emmary Simpson ...I like shiny things.....

Seriously, I'm trying to look at things differently. I wanted a video from Darren Hardy this am and he said take everything out, and then start to replace it one, by one, and you will see what you really need, and don't need. I think I have to do this with my business plan for next year. I've go so many things I don't get them done.

Hmmmm.....
