I Got the Monkey Off of My Back Today!

This is not a "political" post - no sides here - just an expression of my thoughts!  I cannot remember an election being so stressful, divisive or depressing in my life.

Many of you are friends of mine on Facebook and have probably seen the post about the letter that was sent to me regarding my 'application' for registration (to vote).  I've been registered to vote in my county since 1988 and had even updated my address in 2014 when we built our home.  I was current and as a registered Independent Voter, I was still undecided - even after the 3rd debate.

But, you better believe, I was GOING TO VOTE! Yesterday, the Board of Elections confirmed for me that I was active and should have no problem voting but, it was still unnerving to find that they had NOT been the sender of that letter.  The jury is still out on who sent the letter but, there are several organizations investigating.

That all said, I was going to try to vote yesterday (the first early voting day that I could vote following my receipt of the fictitious letter).  I simply could not bring myself to do it because I just was not ready - I had a little more 'investigating' to do and realized yesterday that being an independent voter is very much like being a referee for a game that both teams are coached by friends of yours.

It's also akin to being a moderator in a debate where half of your friends are members of one debate team (party) and half of them, members of the opposing debate team (party).

Similarly, buyers and sellers often find themselves on opposite ends of the spectrum; I have buyers interested in a lovely home right now that is priced $40K over fair market value.  The sellers think their home is worth FAR more than the buyers believe it to be.  Each party believes that they are right - when in truth, both have some good points (and some not-so-good ones)!

Being an Independent also means that one doesn't agree with any one party in its entirety.  It also means that your friends from other parties select the candidates for whom we all must vote.  I have to say, this year, all parties did a terrible job of picking!

After agonizing over this all day yesterday, I finally decided that nothing was going to be 'uncovered' in the next 2 weeks that could push me in any one direction and I couldn't stand not knowing if I was going to be able to vote.  So, off to the polls I went today for early voting!

I was thrilled to see such a great turnout at the voting poll near my office and to find that I had absolutely no issues voting!  I returned home with a sense of absolute GLEE!  I HAVE VOTED.  That monkey is FINALLY off of my back!

Watching the news this evening was SO refreshing - no story or ad has to be investigated or considered - the DEED IS DONE!  I can't tell you how exhilarating that is!

Debe,

Good for you.  Voting by mail or other ways is very helpful, especially if one travels.  I thought you were referring to the book by Ken Blanchard about getting the monkey off your back.  If you have not read it, it is worth it.  A

It's SO distressing to me that someone would do that and I hope how soon they find out who sent it.  Happy Wednesday, Bob!

Right?!  It's been a crazy election season, for sure!  I'm thrilled to almost have this behind us - and just as excited to have gotten my voting done!

I typically wait until election day but, this year I was extremely worried that I wasn't going to be able to vote and I wanted time to remedy any issues that I ran into at the poll.  Thankfully, I had zero issues!

Glad you're ready - I really wasn't ready in one candidate in the election but, decided two more weeks wasn't going to help me decide on that one candidate anyway!   Happy Wednesday!

Debe Maxwell Good news that you took the plunge early. I am thinking the same as I know November 8 will be a zoo! Hope you confirmed your vote was as you inteneded as there has been overwhelming evidence of widespread vote tampering.

You could either use the machines or request a paper ballot.  We didn't want to worry about computer error so, we opted for the paper ballots.  Hopefully what was submitted sticks!

We very rarely get to vote in person on election day as it is our late fall vacation period.  So absentee ballots are our thing

I've never done absentee voting but, after voting early, I realize the convenience of getting it out of the way ahead of time - and beating the heavy crowds!

Hi Debe Maxwell People think that California is "solidly" iin the Democratic column, but in San Diego County we have three congress  seats and two of them are solidly Republican. I would be afraid to live where my Congressman was not a Republican.

With all that said, your state is still up in the air. I hope it lands on the right side.

We also vote "absentee" because we both are working far from home on election day. I'm glad everything in that area worked out for you.

Thanks, Bill!  I did not know that San Diego County was so Republican - very interesting!  On the east coast, we think all Californians are Democrats!

This was my first early voting - it was truly painless!  I love beating the long lines!

Debb- the stress this election is causing is phenomenal.  And, what is sad, or depressing, is that THIS is what we have to choose from.  Most people I know are finding it difficult to come up with a decision that they feel comfortable with.

Oct 26, 2016 03:20 AM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

Isn't it so sad, Kathy?  I hate even turning on the radio or TV - that's all that seems to be on and I'm truly sick of the mud-slinging!  I'm wondering if today's news given some clarity to some of those who haven't voted yet?

I just saw that we have early registration here too. One is too far, but the weekend one is much closer. However, I like to go on the day and join the masses. I like the atmosphere. But good for you for getting it over with.

I typically go on election day as well, Jane!  You're right, there is something about the atmosphere but, after our experience this week - great weather and a short line - I'm sold on early voting!

I asked my husband why in the world are we NOT signed up for voting by mail? Why are we still trudging over to our voting place and doing it the old fashioned and tiring way? He said he doesn't trust that postal employees will actually send the ballots. You know how nuts some of those postal workers can be, LOL (I can say that as my sister retired from the post office), and even a few weeks ago, one guy in Sacramento was fired from the P.O. for throwing away those voter booklets instead of putting them in our mailboxes. Of all things!

Oct 26, 2016 10:32 AM

I heard about that, Elizabeth!  I have seen the warnings about the postal service also so, maybe your hubby is onto something!

Hi Elizabeth, I drop mine off at our city hall in an actual ballot box. You can find out where there are local areas to drop off the ballot.  In fact we can drop it off at any polling location as well - I don't think you have to stand in any line to do that.

Oh, I know, right?!  That is all anyone seems to want to talk about and I'm over it!  Of course, I worry about our country but, none of these candidates are going to 'fix' our nations problems as they boast.  We truly need a clean slate - chock full of GOOD, honest citizens!  (Yeah, that's my pipe dream!)

Hi Debe... I also voted this week... really for the first time ever in early voting. Normally, I like to wait for Election Day so it feels like Election Day to me.

I do the same thing, Nina!  But, didn't it feel good to get it out of the way and not have the long wait like we normally do on election day?  I've never voted early either but, I think I'm spoiled now!  :-)

Hi Debe Maxwell - when we first moved out of CA, we set up a vote by mail here in Sedona.  It is so nice to take our time and research everything we need to know.  Here's what bothered me.  I kept getting jury summons for Riverside County in CA and every year I would have to prove I was a resident of AZ.  I found out that my husband and I were still registered to vote in CA.  We could have done this very easily because we have two home. I had to send a certified letter to the registrar of voters for Riverside County before it finally got resolved.  How many people go through that kind of trouble to de-register? Probably not many.

As a fellow independent, your post hits right on target. You really do feel like the referee on both sides. I am so glad I am an independent and can see the pros and cons of both sides of any arguement vs blindly following the herd. This election more than any other, has really shown why we all should be independent thinkers. I turned my monkey in last week too. LOL

And you expected to have no new information that would change your vote. You can probably guess that I voted immediately, but in my state, It won't matter. Hillard didn't even bother to visit, she know she has no chance here.
