The Modern Kitchen Styles By AK Studio, Scottsdale

While in Scottsdale this week, we stopped into AK Studio to visit our friend  who specializes in designing contemporary kitchens.  Personally we are tired of granite as the ubiquitous countertop, and we were looking forward to seeing what Joe had come up with.  The picture above is what he refers to as a modern Crafstman style.

This pantry is done with barn doors made of African mahogany.  The wood  in our opinion made the kitchen.  This is one side of the pantry. Below is the other side.

Check out the silverware drawers.  The spice jars are hollowed out concrete cores. We love the ingenuity of taking a common item and making it useful and special.

Details like this ingenious design of the corner cabinet that is often hard to get to and a waste of space make a huge difference.  We learned so much about the latest and greatest equipment as well as the new materials on the market.

Lovely!  Is the countertop quartz instead of granite?   That seems to be what's up next.

Dianne Goode Carrera marble.  Our friend is part of an amazing team that builds in concrete and steel only.  It is their niche.

Michael Jacobs they had a Santa Barbara kitchen which I loved, and the countertop was wood that he was telling us was stronger than steel and better than butcher block.  I can't remember the name of the wood (I will ask) that was a bit more traditional.  I learned that steam ovens are replacing microwaves.  Both Ron and I have never liked them, and did not have one when we redid our kitchen in LA.  Subsequently, we had one in the last home, and did not use it.  A

Very nice design! Although I like exterior cabinet design slightly less modern the useful value is nearly perfect!

Not quite my personal style, Alexandra and Ron... but I do love the pull out shelves... and I can appreciate this aesthetic.

Lovely kitchen - I can see this style in our mid-century modern homes we have throughout the valley. There is nothing better than a extremely well-planned kitchen that is highly funtional as well.  I have one and I love it. I know exactly where everything is and it's never a mess (like it used to be)!!

Anna Banana Kruchten our friend works closely with Construction Zone, and they do only concrete and steel construction.  They do some spectacular work, and when we come back, we will have time to go look at some of those homes.

Belinda Spillman Joe had shelves of different materials they are using,  They also had beautiful backsplashes that had textures instead of tile or granite.  Some really interesting stuff.  We had so little time for a proper visit, and we had one more meeting with the firm we are working with before boarding the plane home.

Hi Ron & Alexandra - That's a beautiful kitchen, and I love the choice of materials. I'd need more prep space, though.

While looking at those kitchen pictures, I had a flash back to the kitchen of my youth.  There were turquoise appliances, and yellow birch cabinets.  We've come a long way, Baby!
