by San Jose REALTOR Michelle Carr Crowe
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'"
- Martin Luther King, Jr
Born on January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. grew to become one of the greatest Social Activists the world has ever known. At 35, he became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace prize.
His ministry and commitment to peaceful, non-violent demonstrations inspired people of all ages and races. His "I Have Dream" speech in Washington, DC was a seminal event in the civil rights movement. Many consider him the Gandhi of the United States.
January 15th marks the official day of Doctor Martin Luther King's birthday, though as a nation we observe MLK Day on the third Monday in January. This year it is celebrated today, January 16th.
He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 while making a speech from the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. His birthday became a National Holiday by an act of Congress in 1983.
Many consider it a day to serve your community or "Day of Service". Reach out to your fellow neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers to see what positive change you can make!
