Learning To Sell Is Like Learning To Swim And Riding A Bike

I did not learn to swim until I was about 10 years old, and the toughest part of learning to swim for me was learning to relax.  When I would get in the water I would tense up, and as a result sink like a lead weight.  It was the same with learning how to ride a bike.  I was not able to take off the training wheels until I learned to relax.  Just like Learning To Sell Is Like Learning To Swim And Riding A Bike, you have to relax.

I became a Loan Originator late in life, but I have been in sales for two thirds of my life.  When I became a Loan Originator after 30 years in sales, I followed all the same principles that made me successful in my prior sales careers.  I worked hard, learned my product, learned from those who were successful, networked, as well as all the other things I knew I needed to do to succeed.  But there was one thing which took me a long time to learn.  It took me much longer than it should have to learn to relax.

I was so focused on succeeding, and working 24/7 to accomplish it, that I was not taking time to stop and refuel.  I was a Loan Originator for 5 years before I took a vacation, and as a result I came close to emptying my tank.  I had not come to the realization yet, that a necessary part of success which is just as important as learning my product, providing the best customer service possible, and networking, was taking time to refuel.

No matter how much success we achieve, once we empty our tank it takes a long time to refuel again.  It took 5 years to come to that realization, but lucky for me even though the needle was approaching empty, the light came on and I stopped to relax and refuel.

I was afraid to take a vacation because I kept thinking about the business I was losing during that time, but the fact was I stood to lose far more business if I did not take the time to relax and refuel my tank.  I had forgotten one of the most important lessons of when I was learning to swim and ride a bike, I had forgotten to relax.  Fortunately for me I came to the realization that Learning To Sell Is Like Learning To Swim And Riding A Bike, I need to relax, and I applied that same principle in my career as a Loan Originator.

Pause to refresh and vacations are travel, change of scenery, fun. Glad you now schedule vacations! I hear Gabe Sanders is over due and planning his! Why people don't let go, relax. Just came back from a cruise, have booked the next one. You need some blue green water, sand, steel drum music and that fruity drink with the umbrella and a touch of fire water. Ya Mon. Don't worry, be happy now.

"There is not try, just do".  Trying to relax doesn't work.  You either do it or you don't.  Same as success.

Sigh. We've been contemplating several vacations for later this year and I just haven't been able to say "yes" because I am thinking of all the business I will lose. But this is a great wake-up for me. I need to say yes to a get-away before I get to a point where the tank is empty.

Thank you for this - I am beginning to realize that I need to give myself permission to have fun again.  We all need to take a little time off

Good morning George, I can certainly relate. I had to learn a valuable lesson prior to real estate, today, I'm not afraid of losing business, it will always be there but the days I lose will never come back.

Great post and very true about sales, in general.  If you sell every day, there is certainly an instinctive element to it, which I would also agree is necessary if you hope to offer great service to your clients.  When you learn to ride a bike, for instance, you stop thinking about balance altogether.

As for swimming and as a triathlete, I had one mantra in the water:  Don't panic.  You have to learn to relax and you have to realize that things won't always go your way.  You can't fight the water and you can't control the environment.  You can adjust your sails and the best way to do that is to keep a cool head.

Great post and well-deserved feature.

From 2003 to 2006 I was just like that, working in new construction where our model was open every day except Christmas and Easter there was no time for a vacation as i did not want to miss a sale. These days it is more important to go to a school event, my daughters sports games and to take short 4 day vacation when it slows George Souto

I didn't learn to swim until I was a freshman in college!  Ok, just a slow learner.  I still need to balance my life more, but I am working on it. (I got a B in swimming, but need to get an A in balancing life!)

I met a young man this past week. He is into Vitamin business and he comes home early most of the time. Learn to enjoy himself with three BMWs.

Sales is the kind of profession that is realtively easy if one start early. Many older folks have to additional income often are struggling.....

Very true!  I learned early on in my career that if I did not plan the vacations at the beginning of the year, they would not happen.  If I planned them ahead, I could work around them and there was no worry about losing business.  In fact, when I took a week off in January, I received several calls and emails from new clients.  All of them were just fine with seeing me when I got back the next week.  They didn't need to know why I could not meet them sooner, they just needed to know when I could fit them in.  Take the time off or your business will definitely suffer!

Great post, as they say you have to sharpen your axe, taking time to relax is necessary for all of us. I find meditation helps me to relax daily and then be more focused on what I am doing.

George, All week I have been telling myself ... I NEED A BREAK.  I've wanted to escape for the day ... get out and away from the madness. Not a vacation ... just a day to relax and let it all go. We do need to relax, refuel, and take care of our own needs too.  Congrats on the Gold Star.

More states are legalizing marijuana. This should help more people relax. Watch an old Cheech and Chong movie.

I went without vacation for a couple years, but five is crazy! It's very easy for me to be focused on work and forget the importance of relaxing. Thanks for the reminder, George.
