Special offer

You are one of the most "reachable" people I know

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

While showing property recently, I told my buyers that I was expecting a phone call.  I don't normally accept calls while I'm working with clients (be they buyers or sellers)... I like to give whomever I'm with my undivided attention.

I explained that I was waiting to hear if a different set of buyers offer had been accepted.  Something we Realtors struggle with ... (do I take the call and interrupt my current clients, or do I disappoint the clients waiting at the other end of the call?)

When that call came in, I took it quickly... our offer had been accepted.

Made a really quick call to my buyers to congratulate them, and told them I'd be calling to give them follow-up information as soon as I was done with my current showings.

I apologized to my buyers, for the brief interruption... and they told me that they didn't really consider it an interruption.  They considered it a representation of just how reachable I was.

They went on to explain that I was one of the most reachable people they'd met... whenever they call me I either answer my phone immediately or give them a call back right away.  They were impressed and happy to see my reachability in person with another buyer.

I suppose it might have been perceived differently had I sat and chatted with the other buyers.  But my call was polite and brief.

Ain't that something?  What I viewed as a potential negative, was seen as a positive.

Love that you were reachable Alan but I too turn my phone off when I am with clients so as not to interrupt - but this was an important one!

Good morning Alan May ,

I'm glad Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-ha" moments for the week! When you are negotiating offers it's imperative to be "reachable". I'm sure your clients were thinking they would like that kind of service when they write an offer on a home!

Apr 23, 2017 05:44 AM
Alan May

that's precisely what they said.

Alan - I think telling them ahead of time was an important step. So was keeping it brief.

I think that's true.

Hi Alan

This is a great example of how you work hard for your clients and provide the best possible communication whenever you can. Letting your buyers know up front, and then taking just a moment shows you are concerned about them.

I'm with Marte Cliff - explaining in advance you were expecting an important call included them in the process. I would have done the same thing. They know you would do the same for them in a similar situation.

And THAT right there is a clear example of how you remain respectful to all of your clients, while being honest at the same time about a potential interruption. AND a positive outcome all of the way around!

and that, right there, is an example of a great comment.

You also set the expectation that you were waiting for that call.  That is key too.

I'd agree... very important.

Alan I think so many people today appreciate that you are accesible. I know this is something we get a lot from clients that they can always reach us or we get right back to them as you do. People also understand, and setting expectations as you did allowed them to prepare themselves and it probably was not as awful as they might have thought it would be, so it ends up being a major positive.

Apr 23, 2017 04:55 PM

it would appear that the "setting the expectation" part of the story was a pretty important aspect.

Letting your client know you were expecting another call was like re enforcing the fact that you are accessible. Both clients were given attention - neither felt they were out of connection with you.  I'm sure they appreciate this, you will give them the same consideration.  Glad it worked out.

I always have my phone in my hand.

If I am in negotiations on a home, yes I will step away for a moment while my buyers look. When at a listing appointment I do turn it off and then promptly call back missed calls. Being reachable is what makes us good agents in my opinion.

Cosiderate and professional behaviour is almost always appreciated.  If I know I have an important call coming, I'll will give my clients a heads-up and then ask permission to take the call when it comes.  Just a courtesy and I've never been told "no".
