April 30th is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day. Today is a great day to adopt a shelter pet in the Charlotte, North Carolina metro area (or anywhere else for that matter). Millions of homeless dogs and cats are housed in shelters in the Charlotte metro area, as well as all around the country.
It's estimated that over 2.5 million dogs and cats are adopted annually from shelters in the USA. But that's on top of some 3 million that are euthanized each year! Keep in mind that when you adopt a shelter pet, you are saving a life.
There are some estimates that say there may be as many as 70 million stray cats out there! Here are a few more statistics:
-
Only 20-30% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues.
- Five out of ten dogs in shelters and seven out of ten cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.
And did you know that adopting a pet is good for your health? Pets (especially dogs) help us maintain a more active lifestyle. And, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pet ownership has been shown to help lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and feelings of loneliness. It seems like a "no brainer" to adopt a dog or cat.
