Today Is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day ~ It's A Great Day To Adopt!

National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

April 30th is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day.  Today is a great day to adopt a shelter pet in the Charlotte, North Carolina metro area (or anywhere else for that matter). Millions of homeless dogs and cats are housed in shelters in the Charlotte metro area, as well as all around the country.

It's estimated that over 2.5 million dogs and cats are adopted annually from shelters in the USA. But that's on top of some 3 million that are euthanized each year! Keep in mind that when you adopt a shelter pet, you are saving a life.

There are some estimates that say there may be as many as 70 million stray cats out there! Here are a few more statistics:

  • Only 20-30% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues.

  • Five out of ten dogs in shelters and seven out of ten cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.

And did you know that adopting a pet is good for your health?  Pets (especially dogs) help us maintain a more active lifestyle. And, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pet ownership has been shown to help lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and feelings of loneliness. It seems like a "no brainer" to adopt a dog or cat.

Nina Hollander - This is a wonderful post! Yesterday I went to the local Region's Greyhound Adoption Birthday Party. I'm not a pet owner anymore but I care for people's pets when they are away. I learned so much about the importance of adopting these very special animals. Plus, the people who adopt them are so very, very special. I could tell, by talking them that those who adopt are true American Heroes to these pets that don't deserve to be abused but loved by someone who can.

Your post is so meaningful and heartfelt too. It really tugged at my heart!

Patricia Feager ~ hi Patricia... I simply adore Greyhounds! They are the loveliest and sweetest of animals. Our Gracie, who passed on to doggie heaven about 18 months ago, was part Whippet, which is in the Greyhound family. All of our cats and dogs have been adopted and they are simply the best. I just hope my post touches a few more hearts to go out and give a deserving animal a loving home.

Nina.

What a great reminder for people to adopt pets.  Patricia Feager mentioned greyhounds, and when we lived in Napa, we went to a Greyhound adoption party.  I had no idea that they loved to lounge even though they are great runners.  They are really beautiful creatures.  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel ~ hi Alexandra and Ron... that is always the surprising thing about Greyhounds... how calm they are. They run fast once they start running, but they are very laid back dogs and love to just hang out.
