This post is our participation in the Strength/Weakness challenge offered by Carol Williams this month. If you are considering forming a team in your practice this an excellent
way to examine what you bring to the business and the kind of person and the talents he/she has to contribute that will best compliment yours and make the team effort most successful.
It's no secret that the things that you LIKE to do are the things that you usually do best. Conversely, those that you dread are most often the ones at which you don't excell. That kind of objective examination or one done for you by someone you know, may help you determine your best attributes.
David and I have very different talents and personalities. We approach our real estate practice with a "division of labor" based upon the strengths and weaknesses we each have. My "former life" was as the owner of a marketing agency and one degree is in Journalism...I enjoy writing and marketing very much. We also do some public speaking whether it is to a local chapter of the bar association or a networking group...(oh I love being "plugged in" !)
One of David's talents comes from his "former life" in construction and he is the agent who attends inspections and forever after helps our clients with the right contractor for properties. He is also the artful negotiator not only for the purchase of services and materials but with the Banks for the short sales we still have come our way.
As a couple we relate to couples in the divorce niche of our practice...with women sometimes being more comfortable with women and men with men.
We share the parts of the highly automated paperwork and marketing/sales tabulation.. projection and review. We have forever in our marriage as well as our practice, had regular goal oriented reviews of our marketing plans, sales and projects and find that we compliment each other in approaching these things. If we are taking on a remodeling project...our own or general contracting for a client we research the materials and David's construction works with my decorating and the finished project is the best of what we both contribute to the end result.
For the things that neither of us do well...know we should do...require skill above our pay grade or time we don't have to devote...we outsource the task. Knowing what you don't know...don't want to or have the time to learn and having the resources to pay for it has always been a part of our lifestyle and practice. (There is a reason God made cleaning ladies, lawn and garden experts, accountants, mailing houses, etc.)
Know what you don't know...do the things you do well to the best of your ability...delegate the things that are "not your thing"....live long and prosper !
