I have no memory of these cottages but I suspect they were located near the Harding campus and used by transitory Harding folks to some extent.
Looks like they have a neon sign which was not too common at that time. I remember a couple of Harding students ran a sign shop and made neons. They were next door to Wyatts Radio Shop where I worked in 1953 -54.
Don, thanks for all that information including a map! I guess the "Van" should have been a clue that they could have been owned by the Van Pattens but I didn't think of it.
Lavada, you got it right! Thanks for letting us know where they were.
Yep. The Van's Cottages were where Captain Dee is now. There were two rows of them 4 facing East and 4 Facing west. They were owned by my grandparents, I. B and Linnie Van Patten who lived in a Rock house directly across Race St from them, where Kroger parking lot is now. Bill Durham ran an auto repair and auto junk yard on the South corner of Moss St. and he and Iree and their daughter lived upstairs over the auto repair shop. (Gloria Durham and I played together when we were 5-6-7 yrs old ) there was a China Berry tree in my grandparents front yard. Those round berries looked like yellow marbles. Lots of memories of this area .... Mary Kathryn Van Patten James. .... my younger brother, Irvin Van Patten's memories are correct in his post... I remember those gasoline pumps with the gasoline inclosed in glass cylinders and you could see it slosh when gasoline was pumped!!! That service station was on the corner of Moss and Race. Moss St was dirt and gravel then.... mostly dirt. MkJ
Mary Kay, thanks for that very vivid description of how things were then. I wish we had a picture of the rock house that your grandparents lived in. See if you can find one and we'll share it on this blog.
