Ask an Ambassador: eliminating half the population as potential clients

I had a conversation with another AR member earlier in the week about politics. Well sort of, we actually talked about keeping our opinions about politics off our posts and off our Facebook page.

Now I'm not talking about pretending to be someone I'm not.  I can't and don't hide who I am.  I'm a person who often lets my faith show and speaks my mind.  However, I'm not an extremist.  I'm not a "but it has to be my way or you are wrong" kind of person.  I have a great deal of respect for people believing and thinking differently from me. Those to right of me, those to the left of me and those who think people made God up and those who are waiting for the Messiah to yet be born.

I, back when I was posting regularly, was very limited as to posting anything that I felt is so divisive that it basically makes half the people in the country say "oh that isn't my agent, she's nuts".  I'd be willing to bet you that 75% of buyers and sellers have no idea where I stand politically. I am not sure that same statement goes for my religion due to my office decor, but I don't push it on anyone.

My point is that you might want to consider not writing with the intent of being divisive on your blog. The same consideration should be used on your social media sites as well.  Again, I don't mean that you have to be silent or keep your opinions to yourself, but I do believe we should all be open minded and considerate of opinions that differ from our own.

I am a strong believer of everyone having a voice. I find it confusing when someone demands their right but is offended when someone with an opposing view exercises their rights.

I know agents that go ahead and gladly get rid of 50% of the population and speak their mind.

I do not cover up who I am, but watch for the appropriate time and place to speak my thoughts.

Good post

Tammy, Religion, politics and sex are not open for discussion in my posts and most generally not at all unless it is with someone I know and trust.  If asked, I will respond. For the most part, I ignore the "noise" and focus on the constructive use of my time and energy.

One exception about the sex thing ... I will post about the agent that got caught and lost their license for their indiscretions in a clients home or vacant home.

I think what you write in social media cannot help but give insight into who you are. If what you right is strident, hateful, accusatory, critical, off-putting, etc. you will be seen as someone to be avoided…except by those whose views are in accord with yours.

Tammy- You are one of the first bloggers I followed here and love reading about Donald and your life.  And, I agree with everything you said. People do have a right to say what they want and some say it in a  more professional manner than others. Even if I agree with the person's opinion, it turns me off if they're ranting about it or knocking the other side. And, in that case, I probably wouldn't refer someone to them.

Hi Tammy, you have brought up some very good points for online behavior.  I love to discuss differing points of view in person, and I learn a lot from other people that way - it gives me an oportunity to hear "the other side" and consider different ideas.  That said, it usually doesn't play well online.

Oh, oh, I think you let at least part of your political position show with this statement: "I do believe we should all be open minded and considerate of opinions that differ from our own."

When anyone tries to get political information from me, I tell them I am a Utilitarian and vote for whatever works for me, like all night donut shops.  It stops the conversation and moves it on to something else.  Buying or selling a home should be fun and there is no fun in arguing.

I know agents that aren't afraid of letting their divisive opinions fly.  Their attitude is that you may eliminate 50% of the population, but you pull the other 50% of the population closer.  Best to keep 'em guessing in my opinion.

Great post and proof that differing opinions or beliefs can live harmoniously on the same page. Now, if we could only master the same world.

I tend to not post divisive things, I just don't like the fighting.  I can see the side of it where someone wouldn't care if they lost half the population because sometimes they may gain someone else.  My husband, for example, is a hunter and one of his business photos is in some hunting gear.  He has gained clients because of that photo that felt they connected with him.  He's probably lost opportunities too that we will never know about because of it. But, I don't think that rudeness and fighting and just plain being mean because of other beliefs is ever called for. -Kasey

Kasey & John Boles My brother is also an avid hunter and fisherman and he relates to outdoors type people. But he also repsects the land and the animals which I think is lost on many people who don't like guns. I do not hunt or own guns but have tremendous respect for my brother and those like him. Understanding goes a long way.

I try to stay away from politics and I agree that many agents seem to be ready to offend and they speak without thinking.

Yes the last 2 weeks or so I would say that I've seen a lot of heavy handed answers on personal opinions. You can't see any differently or take the highway. I personally stay out of it except when people start insulting people about how they won't get involved. Starting a fight about not fighting, jeezzz.

Spot on Tammy.  I agree 1000% that you have to remain open minded.  Not being open minded in today's uneasy political climate makes one appear not being open to change, no matter what that change is.

Bravo! A healthy, respectful dialogue makes for stimulating conversation. Forcing ones opinions and not giving consideration to the thoughts of another does not.
