I love capers, especially on salmon, but never considered how they grew! While touring picturesque Taormina, Sicily one of the places our guide drove us to was Savoca. While walking up to visit the Church of Santa Lucia in the Sicilian hills he pointed out the the remains of old prisons where an opening of iron grates was visible. This was where family and friends could talk to the the prisoners but not see them. Long vines of capers grew out of the crevices all along the walls. I was amazed how many places they jutted out and hung, just begging to be picked.
Good morning Dorie - I have never seen capers but looks like they could fill an area.

Hmm, I have never intentionally tried eating capers, although I believe that I have had them on my plate and not known, haha.

Those capers on the prison gates ... amazing story, Dorie Dillard. Must have been pure torture for those families. So close to their loved ones, yet so far.

I, too, never thought of how they grow! They must not be hugely abundent considering how much a little jar costs at the grocery store. What an interesting place for them to grow.... oh, the capers they could tell if they could speak!
