4RealzEd Day 22: Writing a blog post

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with 4Realz.net

Writing a blog post doesn't have to be difficult and in the seminar, I mentioned how valuable your "sent items" folder can be for inspiration for blog posts.    With that in mind, today I want you to open up your sent items folder and find an email that interested you when you read it!

And remember... If this is your first blog post don't stress the details.   The good part about your first blog post is that no one is reading it!  ;)

I couldn't emphasize enough that for your first post focus on something you found interesting.   Maybe it was a link to an inspirational video... Maybe it was an email correspondence you had with a client.  Maybe it was an email about a local event you are interested in attending.

When you get down to writing an actual post, I want you to focus on explaining *why* you found the material interesting.

And if you're getting writer's block, just keep it simple.  Personally, most of your readers (myself included) are more likely to be inspired by (and read!) short posts over long ones.

Here are the steps to publishing your first blog post:
1) Click on the text in the top-right that says "My Home"
2) Click on "Post" on the left panel [right after the text that says "My Blog (Post)"]
3) Fill in the Title for your post
4) Write your blog post by filling in the section called "Entry".

BEFORE YOU HIT PUBLISH!

However, before you scroll to the bottom of the page to hit publish, look for areas within you post where you can link to other websites.   For example, if you're talking about a local event, then check to see if the event has it's own website that you can link to.   If you're talking about an online video, make sure you're linking to the video.

And if you're having trouble creating a link, Jeff Turner created a nice video tutorial that shows how to create both a text and an image link.

And NOW you're ready for the last step...

5) scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Post Blog Entry

if you're new to blogging, then hopefully you found this quite painless... If not, let me know in the comments where you're having issues.

LOL!!!  I am remembering the day I started blogging, thinking I was beta testing blog software for a friend.  Then you happened along and apparently HAD been reading my first blog posts.  I still don't understand how that happened.  I was writing without realizing that "people" could read what I was writing, except for those who had asked me to blog.  But there you were, Dustin Luther, reading my first blog posts.

I just received a phone call from an agent, one that I never spoke to in the past and may never speak to again in the future.  The subject of that conversation will become the next blog post of mine on Rain City Guide.

It always amazes me that agents ask "what do I blog about?"  Seems to me that I could write 10 blog posts a day just on what happens in my business life on any given day.  If not for "confidentiality" and not wanting to write about traceable events, I could blog all day on just the topics touched on on any given day in the real estate business.  It's a fascinating career chock full of amazing stories, most of which I write about in hindsight so that readers can't trace the details to my clients.

The blur of past history surpassing the clarity of current events is a huge tool for bloggers, and one that keeps an blogger from being sued.

Dustin,

Greak link to Jeff's Video Turtorial.  This has been quite easy for me as I built pages in html and Frontpage for my original RE website.  IF anyone starting to blog has Frontpage experience the AR tools are not far off.

I am not sure if you saw my latest video blog  Simi Valley Cajun Festival Kick Off

Great work Dustin!

Ardell:  Nothing escapes me!  ;)

I do remember finding your stuff early on...  although I seem to remember you leaving a comment on RCG first.

Ted:  You're getting way too good at those videos.  What fun!   I love the local coverage!

Dustin,

A quick question on all that you've been teaching us.

So, I start blogging on Active Rain and then I paste the same posting to my blog with Word Press. Is that a problem with regards to no longer being original content?

Next question, how do I link my blog and my website to make them happy for the search engines, and finally, I'm guessing I'm better going to GoDaddy getting a URL that makes sense and not the long one from Wordpress?

Sorry if I'm jumping ahead. Thanks so much for all of the help.

Christine:

Here's something I wrote a long ago on the subject (that started a nice little firestorm).

"Talking about organic search results, I let Greg know that I thought he was potentially hurting himself in Google by posting identical articles on both his regular blog and his ActiveRain blog (no longer available). Put very simply (and definitely an oversimplification), when Google sees two identical articles, they are forced to make a choice in determining which article is “good” and which one is “spam”. Assuming you don’t want either of your sites to be labeled “spam”, then don’t have identical content floating around in full. (When a spam site copies your articles in full, you’re just have to trust that Google will figure it all out!) If you’re going to put articles on more than one site, make sure that you change things up a bit, or better yet, summarize the article and link to your main site where the full article can be found. I would point out some of the other people besides Greg who are doing this same thing on ActiveRain, but it appears that word travels fast via email and most of the guilty have taken their ActiveRain blogs down (Joel being the only exception I’ve found at this point… and he really should not be doubling up his content at this point considering he’s still in the process of “teaching” google about his new domain.)"

"However, all this makes me feel bad… Matt, I promise my intentions were good and I wasn’t looking to get people to drop their activerain blogs. I think you’ve got a great platform and others should definitely consider blogging on your site. I just wanted to warn people that they might be committing googlecide (a great phrase coined by Greg!) if they post identical content in both places! For everyone’s benefit, Matt Cutts gives a comprehensive explanation on how to get re-included in Google searches should your site ever be listed as spam, but I don’t think that should be necessary as the re-inclusion request is typically for sites that have actively tried to trick Google in ways much more devious than duplicate content."

My opinion since that day hasn't changed much.

You'll get very little benefit out of duplicating your content on two different sites... and as you get experienced with the different blog platforms, I think you'll find the type of articles that work well on each blog.

In terms of WordPress, I'll talk a bunch more on that in a few weeks when we spend a week blogging on WordPress.com.   But the short answer is "yes"... You want to get your own domain at some point and the good news is that WordPress makes it really easy to host your blog under a unique domain on their service. I do exactly that with 4realz.net and the cost is extremely reasonable.  $10/year(!) to host a WordPress.com blog under your own domain and ~5/year to register a unique domain.

Great questions!

Hey Dustin,

Thanks for answering Christine's question.  I've been double posting to get more exposure, but maybe I'm reducing my exposure.  Thanks for the tip.
