The Golden Isles Part IV---The End

By

This ends our tour of "The Golden Isles".  Yes we are at the foot of the isles.  Contained in Camden County this section of the Golden Isles offers more unique wonder and beauty.  Founded in the 1770's Camden County is one of the original eight counties.  The primary towns are St. Mary's, Kingsland and Woodbine.

Woodbine is the county seat and the access point for two of the true wonders of this area.  Cumberland Island and the Okefenokee Swamp.  Part of the National Sea Shore Cumberland Island is unique with its wide white beaches, wild ponies amidst the massive dune system.  The interior of the island is home to one of the largest remaining coastal forests populated by Live Oak and Palmetto forests which provide the perfect home for the wild horses, turkey, armadillo, mink, deer, alligator and an innumerable variety of bird life.

Located on the South end of Cumberland you will find the ruins of the Carnegie Estate "Dungeness" are found along with Plum Orchard Mansion which was built by George Carnegie and in the early 1970's donated to the National Park Foundation.  Additionally, one will find the Cumberland museum which contains such unique information as the history of the forgotten invasion of the war of 1812 which took place on Cumberland Island.  Assess to Cumberland Island is by Ferry.  Overnight accommodations are available on Cumberland but the best Hotel selection is in and around Kingsland:  Which is where the ferry departs every ten minutes.  Please not reservations for the ferry are required.

The Ofefenokee swamp a national wildlife preserve is a modest 400,000 acres.  Acres composed of canals, cypress tree forests, Lilly pad prairies and an abundance of wild life.  Airboat guided tours are available or if you are a bit more adventurous you can rent canoes and trek off on your on.  Be aware this is a wild, winding and remote area and you should be skilled in woodsmanship or you can get into serous trouble. Accessible from Kingsland this visit is well worth the time.  As in the case of Cumberland the best Hotel accommodations in this area just of Interstate 95.

The City of St. Mary's is a small coastal community that is home to the Kingsbay Trident Submarine base. Housing is moderately priced although several exclusive gated communities and private estates located there.

Overall, Camden County is reported to be the second fastest growing county in the state of Georgia.  Primary regions within the county in which growth is occurring is The Kingsland St. Mary's area with such developments as Laural Grove Island, Osprey Cove and so forth.  But growth is not just restricted to this area.  No in fact Northern Camden is growing rapidly.  This includes such regionally know areas such as Dover and Harriet's' Bluff, Berry Plantation and others.  Many of these are gated communities with amenities such as club houses, community docks; even a golf course or two are available.

That pretty much concludes my brief review of what composes the "Golden Isles of Georgia".  Additional information is available on the internet about all of the islands, cities, or locations noted in these articles.  Of you may contact me at the email address below.  I'd be happy to help you find your answers.....
