Lessons of Leadership

The Cary YMCA recently passed the baton from one group of leaders to another... the most interesting part was that these leaders were anywhere from 12 to 17 years old.  The YMCA has a wonderful Leaders Club program for Middle and High School Students that creates interaction with over 75 students who volunteer each week and work to be leaders among their peers.  We loved the banquet, and the intereaction we've had with our daughter through this program. I want to share their creed, and encourage parents with students who live in a community with a Y to explore the Leaders Club in your area (membership to the Y is not necessary here!).

LIVE YOUR CREED

I'd rather see a sermon than to hear one any day,

I'd rather one should walk with me

than just show the way;

The eye is a better pupil and more willing than the ear;

Advice may be misleading but examples are always clear.

And the very best of teachers

are the ones who live their creeds.

For to see good put into action is what everybody needs.

I can soon learn to do it if you'll let me see it done.

I can watch your hand in motion,

but your tongue too fast may run.

And the lectures you deliver may be very fine and true,

But I'd rather get my lesson by observing what you do.

For I may misunderstand you and the fine advice you give,

But there's no misunderstanding

how you act and how you live...

Parenting and Leading Teenagers is POWERFUL Stuff!

Great poem. As a parent of a teenage boy, it's a tough job. Harder than fighting Capital Hill!

Great post, Eleanor!  I love the Y and all it has to offer whether it be for kids, young adults or adults.  I wish more people would explore the opportunities at their local Y's.

Ok, Eleanor, do you have a Y baby too? My daughter has grown up in the YMCA system. She's a product of summer camps, etc at the YMCA.  She also just got back from the YMCA leadership program in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Did your children go there too?

Jordan, my daughter, will be a Senior at CA next year and one of the Leaders of the Leadership Club.What a wonderful way to raise your family in a wonderful envirnoment and create the right ideals

.we should talk.
