News Flash – The DRE is back

Today I received an email from the State of California Department of Real Estate. It stated that as of July 1st The Bureau of Real Estate would cease to exist. A new Department of Real Estate will emerge.

So, why did this happen? Why did California “kill off” the Department of Real Estate in the first place?

Can’t you guess? The old DRE was a self-funding, semi-autonomous agency. And they managed very well. Maybe too well. While the rest of the State Government was facing bankruptcy, the DRE was flush with cash.

When they dissolved the old DRE, the State took all that money for the general fund.

Do you believe that the “NEW” DRE will get all that money back? Fat chance. So where will they get their money? From us, of course. We can expect fees to increase, and sooner rather than later.

No matter what, I am very happy to see the DRE come back to life.

As they say, “what is old is new again,” Maybe a few other old things will come back to life, such as sales agents working for the brokers, instead of the other way around. Maybe we’ll even see a return of FLOOR TIME. Wouldn’t that be nice?

BTW In California, DRE license numbers are sequential  from the beginning of the agency. My number is DRE 00527512. The latest licenses are numbered over 2,000,000. I don’t know if that is good or bad, or just proof that I’ve been around a long time.

Bill, I think you need to go a little deeper, Governor Moonbean changed it originally that did not need fixing.... cost me new business cards, new stationary, new web changes.... now that he is leaving he is changing it back... well all I can say is his Laurel Cyn days have affected his gray matter...Endre

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. I'm sure there is a connection to his leaving office, but I'm not sure what it is. If we are lucky John Cox will be his successor.

Bill seems to me it is time for CA voters to start voting with the wallet in mind instead of their fragile feelings.

That's true Nina Hollander but it is mostly for the best. We have the most common-sense driving laws in the country. And the little dots on the highway that define the lanes were invented here. And the list goes on.

Thanks for commenting.

Hi George Souto I was up late last night watching the returns (our primary was yesterday) and for the most part I was very happy with the results, especially here in San Diego County.

Nina Hollander   The primary considerations are Texas, Tennessee, and Florida. Your NC is also possible. The criteria are (1) right-to-work (2) weather (3) land cost and availability (4) taxes (5) cost of living (6) lifestyle (7) accessibility (8) and of course OPPORTUNITY.

BTW my wife is deathly afraid of snakes. She says they can jump.

Hi Bill- I can't respond re: DRE but I will tell you My Home State of Texas has cockroaches so big we put saddles on them! Our good friends just moved to Monterey, TN after they researched where to retire. They love it. And down here in Florida...well, yes we do have snakes, gators, and lots of great weather.

Hi Kathy Streib Thank you for that. Florida is in the running because my wife has family there. I think I could do well in Texas, but your comment is well taken. Tennessee might just be it. I like country and western music. It might be fun to be close to it.
