Locally known as "Four-toed Pete" the world's only 4-headed Palm is being cut down today in Panama City. The city is removing the tree due to significant root damage and one completely dead head. The tree is estimated to be 80 to 100 years old was originally located over by the Millville Wastewater Treatment plant, before it was discovered. In May of 1997, the tree was successfully transported to the park where it then became an icon of St. Andrews for years.
At one point in time, a botanical garden in Texas offered the city $40,000 for the tree, however city council voted to remain here where it can bring life to St. Andrews.
In partnership with Gulf Coast Tree Service and Gulf Coast State College, the city is planning to create laser-etched memorial plaques from pieces of the tree. I have personally seen this tree many times, and it will be a loss to the community.
With an annual maintenance fee of $2,000-$2,700 it is understandable why the city would declare the tree in "irreversible decline". There are many people from the area who have gathered to witness the historic removal.
