When Moving Pack Like A Professional

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

Each year many people move out of their current home into a new home.  Prior to moving, they need to start developing a written master moving plan with the ability to update the plan as you move towards moving day.  Written plan will help you not to forget something, and control your time and expenses.  Following are a list of items you may want to include in your master plan:

Discard items - Identify items you no longer use.  Determine how you would feel if you no longer had these items.  If okay not having these items, then either recycle, donate, or sell items in a garage sale.

Similar items - When packing be sure to pack similar items in the same box.  There final destination, should be going to the same room.

Items to move yourself - Important to decide which items you move yourself.  Items you may want to consider moving yourself may include: family photos, valuable breakables, first aid kit, medicine and important financial documents.

Understand what movers will take – Be sure to check with the mower on what items they will not pack and move.  This usually includes plants and liquids.

Under 50 pounds – Do not pack more than 50 pounds of items into a box.  Over packing boxes increases the probability of damaging items before reaching their destination.

Fragile items – Pad boxes on all sides using bubble-wrap and paper to protect items from getting broke in transit.  Do not put excessing number of items into a box.

Label Boxes – Label boxes on more than one side, and setup a labeling system that identifies which room the box goes to when it reaches its destination.

Moving documents – Keep personal documents together and separate from your items that are being moved.  These documents should be in separate bag and/or on an online digital file.  Moving documents should include vital contact information, and moving driver’s license number, name, license number of moving van, and moving company’s number.

Map and directions – If movers and helpers do not have GPS, provide them maps and directions.  Be sure to include your contact information, such as cell phone.

Computer files – Be sure backup your computer files on the Cloud or on a separate hard drive which should be stored in another location from your computer.

Arrival at new home – Your moving plan should include claims procedure if you have damage goods upon arrival at your new home.  Upon arrival, inspect all boxes and pieces of furniture for damage
