When it comes to the landscaping in your yard, there is a great deal of time and money involved. And most of our lawn-care activities aren’t the best for the environment. Because of this, making your lawn more environmentally-friendly is the recommended way to go. But there are so many questions and so much uncertainty about what to plant, how to reduce pollution as well as chemicals, and how to maintain your yard. To save you time form researching how to begin landscaping your yard to be more eco-friendly, here are some tips and tricks to get you started.

What is green landscaping?

Before we begin, we must first understand what exactly green landscaping is. It’s defined as a method that allows you to organize your lawn in a way that reduces your time and money, while also reducing energy. Any yard that is classified as a green landscape generally reduces the most amount of pollution possible, whether it be soil, air, or water pollution. In addition to this, green landscapes also nurture the wildlife that are present in its environment.

Finding native plants to your region is a great way to start landscaping your yard in the greenest way. You can find some native plants to your region by clicking here. By choosing plants that are naturally comfortable in their environment, you’re saving time in general because they’re already accustomed to your region.

Instead of building fences surrounding your lawn, plant a living wall or landscape hedges. By doing so, you will be generating your yard into a green wonderland. Additionally, they require little attention to maintain and they provide more privacy than a fence for you.

Planting deciduous trees is a great way to provide shade in the summer as well as provide warmth in the winter. Not only that, but adding trees to your yard requires little maintenance, it provides more privacy for your family, and it adds a greener environment to your yard. You can find the right trees for your yard’s location by clicking here.

Depending on the region you live in, whether it’s more desert-like or forest-like, there is always room for improvement when it comes to providing the best resources for both your yard and the environment. Here are tips specifically for the different regions that you may live in.

Places with low forestation:

  • Refrain from watering your lawn as much. - Your lawn is naturally programmed to receive less water, and by watering it more than it’s accustomed to, you’re doing more harm than good.

  • Apply only small amounts of nitrogen-based fertilizers to your lawn. - Nitrogen can harm your grass in large quantities.

  • Mow your grass less often. - Constantly cutting your grass doesn’t allow the soil to preserve its moisture, and it affects the root structure of the grass.

In addition to these tips, also consider xeriscaping. It is defined as a landscaping method that’s focused on surviving drought. This type of landscaping is a way for homeowners in low-forested regions to maintain their lawn in a way that limits the need for watering. It involves replacing grasses with drought-resistant trees and plants, and it also involves placing plants that require the same amount of water together. This both conserves water and enriches the soil.

Places with higher forestation:

  • Purchase permeable paver for your driveway. - Permeable pavers are more eco-friendly than concrete because instead of forcing water to flow down your driveway and into storm sewers, you’re allowing the water to flow into the ground.

  • Use organic mulch. - This conserves moisture in the soil and also prevents weeds from growing and spreading.

  • Switch from gas-burning lawn mowers to cleaner-burning electrical engines. - The emissions from lawn mowers are a significant source of air pollution.

  • Create compost piles instead of bagging your lawn’s waste (branches, twigs, loose grass, and leaves). - Compost piles can be broken down into fertilizer for your lawn.

In addition to all of these tips for homeowners in high-forested areas, it’s also advisable that you mow your grass less frequently and allow it to maintain the length of at least 3 inches. By doing so, you’re allowing the soil to remain cool and to preserve its moisture. Healthy soil provides healthy plants and your grass will look better.

Overall, there are many tips and tricks that can be performed in order for you to maintain a lawn that is more environmentally-friendly. Some of these trips require more work on your end, but a great deal of the other ones actually save you money, time, and energy. And in addition to saving resources, you’re also saving the Earth’s environment!
