Saturday Smiles: Santa Barbara Farmers Market On A Partly Rainy Day!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

We had a few hours of rain in the wee hours of the morning, and light rain was falling as we drove to the Saturday Farmers Market.  We were fortunate the rain stopped as we entered the lot.  Many of the regulars were missing, however, there was more than plenty to enjoy and fill our bags with.

Celery root was abundant at the Roots Organic Stand.

Puntarella pictured above is beloved by Italians and those who enjoy the flavor of chicory - sweetly bitter. "Puntarelle or cicoria di catalogna or cicoria asparago is a variant of chicory. The heads are characterized by an elongated shape, light green stems and dandelion shaped leaves. 'Puntarelle' shoots have a pleasantly bitter taste. Wikipedia"Sliced thin, they can be added to salads or cooked with garlic and anchovies.

Rainbow chard and spinach made a lovely contrast at the Garden of Eden stand.

Blood oranges, one of our favorite citrus varieties were plentiful this morning.  We love the juice.  It is lower is sugar content, not as sweet as the regular orange juice, and full of antioxidants.

Wishing you a Saturday filled with smiles.

Loved the picture of the rainbow chard and spinach, Alexandra. The celery root was also interesting and as I thought about it, I realized that I've never once in my life bought an celery root!

Considering how delicious everything looks, a little or even moderate rain wouldn't stop me.

We love chicory, so the punterella would have been non our shopping list along with that lovely looking chard. We cook chicory wrapped in ham with a cheese sauce, delicious if somewhat bitter.

My mother loved buying celery root.  And, I have never seen or heard of puntarella.  I'm intrigued!

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD following a dear friend's advice, we have a half a glass of blood orange juice with a tablespoon of Tonic Alchemy mixed in.  It covers all the essential nutrients that vegetables have.  A

Nina Hollander I have a feeling you must have eaten celery root when you lived in Paris.  I love the salad the French make with it, as well as soup.  A

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 we have not tried Puntarelle yet.  Maybe we will on our next trip to Italy.  I like endive and radicchio both of the chicory family.  A

Joe Pryor given the distance that some of the farmers drive to get here the rain is a big factor.  This photo will give you an idea of the empty spaces just on one side of the parking lot where the market takes place.

We don't mind the rain, with our great freeway systems.  A

The best way, I can describe the taste, is that it is less sweet and less acidic than orange juice.  You should try it.  Neither one of us like orange juice.  A
