We had a few hours of rain in the wee hours of the morning, and light rain was falling as we drove to the Saturday Farmers Market. We were fortunate the rain stopped as we entered the lot. Many of the regulars were missing, however, there was more than plenty to enjoy and fill our bags with.
Celery root was abundant at the Roots Organic Stand.
Puntarella pictured above is beloved by Italians and those who enjoy the flavor of chicory - sweetly bitter. "Puntarelle or cicoria di catalogna or cicoria asparago is a variant of chicory. The heads are characterized by an elongated shape, light green stems and dandelion shaped leaves. 'Puntarelle' shoots have a pleasantly bitter taste. Wikipedia"Sliced thin, they can be added to salads or cooked with garlic and anchovies.
Rainbow chard and spinach made a lovely contrast at the Garden of Eden stand.
Blood oranges, one of our favorite citrus varieties were plentiful this morning. We love the juice. It is lower is sugar content, not as sweet as the regular orange juice, and full of antioxidants.
