If My Agent Drives a Fancy Car, Can he Drive a Fancy Deal?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Realty Services

Car fever.  I have to admit, I don't get it like some folks do.  I am one of those people that gets a good car and drives it for 150,000ish miles and then I start thinking about a new one.

When I was a new agent I thought I needed to get a big fancy new car so people would think I was a smart REALTOR(R), but we all know that is not the case.  You can't tell new agents, I tried when the market was humming along.  Now all of those fancy leased cars have been turned back in. We all have to learn.  Now I say I would just assume to pull up in a chevy dragging the tail pipe and smoke everywhere, think Uncle Buck . . .  Not really, but I like to imagine people's faces. LOL.

I have a nice car that I take good care of to get my money out of it.  When I get a new car I pay for it as fast as possible and want to be done with the payment, I hate a car payment.

My current car is a nice import.  It was a couple of years old and a friend took me to a real car auction and picked the car for me.  I told him exactly what I wanted, the miles, color and he picked it up for me at a substantial savings.  The car was still under warranty.  It was a happy deal.

The other day I was noticing the agent's cars in our parking lot.  There are some very nice cars, but I have to say the biggest producers buy good cars and keep their cars for a long time.  Nothing out of this world.  We have some pretty heavy hitters in our office too.

I think the days of equating the car to the agent's capabilities is long over.  I think the over the top luxury cars can be off putting to folks these days.  It screams, yeah I do make too much money and hope like hell I can keep paying for this thing.

The confident, self assured, top producing agent knows his business well enough to not have to over compensate with an "in your face import". This agent is someone who makes sound financial decsisions, someone you should feel comfortable with helping you with your sound decisions.

A fancy car doesn't equal a fancy agent anymore, maybe it never did?

Audrey, I love my old Lexus.  It's paid for so I don't mind so much that it's gas guzzler.

Um, so you're saying driving my Aston Martin to get the sellers signaturs on a short sale doc isn't kosher?  Seriously?

The status symbol is there to bolster an agents ego... to help him or her feel more confident... and that's ok as long as you can pay for it.  Using 30% of your monthly income doesn't constitute 'able to pay for it' either. haha

We've driven MB's for years.   We like that they're safe and comfortable.  Kathy has a 2 year old E wagon and I drive a new Tundra... I put clients of ever financial stripe in both. At the end of the day it's about our skills, not our hood ornament... and as you say, it always was.

Pretty sure I'm not going to tour homes with this guy though.

Patricia, My car is a MB, but it is from 1999 and has been paid for and I love that.  I always say it is the best kind of MB, the paid for kind. ;)

Jesse, Aston Martin, huh- wow business must be booming up in your neck of the woods!  I have a MB too, but like I said it is paid for and not the biggest in your face car.  I get a car that will last a long time and get my money out of it.  I just laugh at the guy that gets a new $100K car every 3 years and isn't selling enough to pay for it.  Priorities?  I think some clients shy away from that "business model".  Thanks for the video clip.  It was exactly what was in my mind, I am not clever enough to put it in my blog.  I have to go find Brad Anderson.

If I had an Aston Martin in my driveway I would... wait, if I had an Aston Martin it wouldn't be in my driveway... it would be... sitting on the side of the road behind what would, I'm sure, be a very grumby Alaska State Trooper saying "Mr. Clifton, please step out of the car... again."  :)

Audrey - I thought of you today.  I met out of town buyers at a new home community today... They arrived after me, when we were getting ready to leave they assumed that I was driving the Lexus in the lot.  I laughed to myself as we drove away in my Jeep.

Jesse, You make me laugh.  My husband always wants to know if I am reading your stuff?  God love you!!  As a matter of fact, I think I am going to go back and read the story about REALTOR Bob - that is a classic.

Debbie, that is so funny.  That makes me feel good that you thought about me today and that I gave  you a good laugh!!

Liz, If that is the trend there, then that is great.  I just know some agents who have those cars, but cant really afford them?  They don't make us smarter?

Realtor Bob's developing a cult following... I may have to post some of his latest antics... :)  There's no shortage with some folks, is there?

I've always heard that if the women don't find you handsome, they should find you funny.  I stuck with jokes cuz, well frankly, I never thougth it was worth the risk. haha

Audrey I don't like car payments. To me not having a car payment is one less bill that I dont have to worry about. I have too much bills as it is already. Don't need more. Great post.

I drive a 1981 Mercedes 280E. I picked it up a few years ago from a lady who had it sitting in her barn for almost 10 years. Everything is original. Ieven have all of the maintenance records. When I pick up a buyer or pull in front of a house for a listing presentation, my car always is admired. This is classic mercedes and it rides like the new ones. I don't even thing about a new fancy car as long as I KEEP THIS BABY LOOKING GOOD!

Jesse, Personality and character is everything.

Lanre, I am with you.  I want my car paid off as fast as possible.

Harris, what a cool car?  I love the classic MB.  My mechanic says they are the ones that last for ever, not the new ones with all the electronic gizmos in them!!   I have to say though, I think that sounds like a fancy car to me.

Audrey~ I could NOT figure out what MB stood for until now, LOL.

I keep saying I want a Benz, but I am really too practical and know it isn't a need! But, is nice to dream....isn't it?

I drive a 2008 Toyota Avalon, my husband bought it for me for my 50th birthday this year.  It is a nice car, and decent on gas, and it is paid for.

I really am not into status symbols or designer labels.  Some people just are.  I am very comfortable and happy with myself. Yes, I do like nice things, but I don't give up my first born for any of it.  What you see IS what you get.  I am genuine and true to myself.

My clients love me because of that! Pretentious people just don't appeal to me! I can hardly stand fake people! I can sense a fake person miles away.  Phoney people are one of my pet peeves. There is nothing wrong with just being yourself and living well below your means and not being influenced with the ways of the world.   Besides, then you can retire earlier if you so choose! Who is the smarter person?

The car does not make the agent. This is a long standing argument I have with my partner. I have never had a car payment and always had a NICE car. My clients know me by the Subaru Forester with the small PEACE sign on the back window. You can bet I'm sharing this post with my partner.

Vickie, That is exactly what I am saying!!  You are a girl after my own heart.  My MB- see I don't even type it out- is older and has been paid for for along time.  That's the way I like it.  I buy something that will last and get my money out of it.  However, I did see a really cute sports car on my way home today . . .   JUST KIDDING>

Good for you Pam, just don't get me in trouble.  There is nothing wrong with having a nice car, but you don't have to have an over the top, in your face " yes, I am overpaid for what I do" kind of car.

You make some very good points! A car does not a realtor make but I have to tell you that since I am in my car a LOT, I enjoy being as comfortable as possible and with as many amenities available. Yes, it's a NICE car but it's for me and not to impress (or intimidate).

By the way, Uncle Buck drove a Ford!!

Best vehicle I ever showed in was a Pontiac Mini Van, easy to get in, lots of kid room.

Worst car I ever showed in was a Yugo!  Check my blog, first "Expensive" home I sold I was in the Yugo.

Cathy, I say get a different car that might be a bit more suitable for the business.  Save the $4000 and buy a good used car that will last and that you like.

Russell, you do make a good point.  I have a good car that I take care of and it has lasted me for awhile.  I agree a chinsey car is no good either.  I just get a kick out of some of the agents that do two deals and show up with a $100K car.  The most successful agents in my office drive good, not cheap, cars and drive them for longer than 5 years.

Greg, Chevy, Ford - whatever.  I never noticed the exact make, I just loved that it was such a bomb!!  I will go over and check out your blog.  I think an expensive house and a yugo make a great combo!!  Thanks for stopping by!!
