May 31st is Opening Day at the 2019 San Diego County Fair
Friday May 31st is a big day.
Of course it’s TGIF, but more importantly it’s Opening Day at the 2019 San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
The nation’s largest County Fair runs through July 4 (the fair is not open on Mondays and Tuesdays EXCEPT July 1st and July 2nd).
The San Diego County Fair always has a theme, and this year it’s “Ozsome,” inspired by the classic tale about The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!
The Del Mar Fairgrounds are world famous for a wide range of events throughout the year, including a variety of trade expos and concerts, and besides the annual county fair are probably best known for the Thoroughbred Racing Season (stay tuned for updates on that!).
The Del Mar Fairgrounds are located just off the 5 Freeway (Via de la Valle exit), at 2260 Jimmy Durante Boulevard. You can get more information at 858-755-1161.
The San Diego County Fair offers everyone an awesome range of exhibits and attractions (truly something for all interests), numerous rides and games, lots of animals, a very busy and diverse concert schedule on 27 nights at the Corona Grandstand Stage, and plentiful food and drink options to suit every taste and budget.
Tickets can be ordered online, plus you can also get discount tickets at Vons and Albertsons, the sponsors. If spending just 1 day at the fair is not enough (and given all there is to see and do I get that), for extra savings go whole hog and indulge in a Season Pass for $32 with admission for all 27 days of the fair.
Parking at the fairgrounds is $17, and $27 for preferred parking. There are offsite locations, too. Another option is to take the Coaster and get off at the Solana Beach station and take the Special Route BREEZE Bus 408 to the West Gate at the fairgrounds.
Residents in the area are all aware of how ugly the traffic can get during fair time, on the nearby side roads including the Coast Road/Route 101, and in particular on the 5 freeway heading north and south near the Via de la Valle exit. And you should expect it will be even worse than usual at rush hour later in the day. So plan accordingly, whether traveling to the fairgrounds or commuting north and south, especially around rush hour (yeah, you know it’s not just 1 hour!!) and on weekends.
