Every once in a while a band of superstar performers unite together to create a Super Group. In April 1988 former Beatle George Harrison and Electric Light Orchestra band leader Jeff Lynne came up with the idea to bring in their friends Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison to record a song titled “Handle with Care”. The track was so successful they decided to form a band and record an entire album. The result was the album entitled Traveling Wilburys Vol 1.
As part of the fun, each of the band members adopted a pseudonym.
- Nelson Wilbury - George Harrison
- Otis Wilbury - Jeff Lyne
- Lefty Wilbury - Roy Orbison
- Charlie T. Wilbury Jr. - Tom Petty
- Lucky Wilbury - Bob Dylan
The band had every intention of continuing to record additional albums but when Roy Orbison died of a heart attack in December 1988 it changed the dynamic of the band. Jeff Lynne, who was one of the driving forces behind Orbison’s comeback was devastated by Roy’s death.
In tribute to Orbison, when the remaining members filmed the music video for the band's song “End of the Line,” Orbison’s’ guitar occupies an empty seat. The remaining four members went on to record a second album titled Traveling Wilburys Vol 3.
Today’s song is The Wilburys first hit “Handle with Care”. I chose it because it features all five band members, each with a chance to step up to the microphone.
