Howard William Cohen was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina back in 1918 to Isidore and Nellie. Raised in Brooklyn, New York he attended Alexander Hamilton High School before going to New York University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English. He continued his education at the New York University School of Law earning his law degree.
He was admitted to the bar in 1941, however his practice was interrupted when he enlisted in the United States Army. At the conclusion of WWII, he was discharged with the rank of Major. He practiced law until 1953, when he was asked to host a show on New York flagship WABC featuring Little League participants, and as they say the rest is history. I could go on about all the accomplishments and controversies he endured, but that would take 3,00 plus words not my standard 200.
While you may not recognize the name of Howard William Cohen surely, you’ve heard the name he changed to while a law student Howard William Cosell in honor of his father and grandfather. He died in 1995, at 77.
