Bernard Eugene Custis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania back in 1928. He graduated from John Bartram High School in 1947. He continued his studies at Syracuse University from 1948 to 1950 playing football setting numerous records that would last for decades. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 1951 NFL draft.
The Browns offered him a chance to play safety, when he refused he was released moving to Canada he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He started in 1951 ending his career in 1956. After his professional career ending he stayed in Canada as a teacher and elementary school principal. From 1973 to 1980 he was the head coach at Sheridan College. In 1994, he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
What you may not know about Bernard “Bernie” Custis is that he is known as the first black professional quarterback in Canada.
