It's hard work, dealing with the economy, the weather, and not able to hire everything done.  Are you cut out to live on a hobby farm?

Heating with wood from your woodlot means part of the yearly rituals include dragging in tree length lumber. Cutting and splitting the timber. Getting it thrown into the cellar or put in the woodshed.  Also battling weeds, pests and worrying about getting it done in and around the weather.  Fixing the old barn and out buildings on your own as you can not afford to spend to get it done...you don't make much money from a small family farm.  But the satisfaction is tremendous if you stick with it.  The outdoor living when the weather is nice makes it like a working vacation.  You feel better, look better and are healthier mentally because you can see what you did today.  No mental stain or being stuck or pinned behind a desk.  Choices on what to grow...what to raise for critters, what is the market for what you produce? With rising fuel prices, food prices and heating costs, you might consider owning a small family farm.  You won't set the world on fire financially but evening sunsets on an open porch with a glass of lemonade or iced tea and knowing you put in a good honest days work is worth it.  Your family benefits from learning work ethic, taking care of what they own. Respect for others property comes with it too. And learning to make do with that piece of equipment or how to modify it to make it work better, cheaper, longer is all part of the experience.  You become a sort of carpenter, a kinda mechanic and a scientist to raise whatever you grow! Eating better, home made knit sweaters and mittens, apple orchards, outdoor flower gardens. Trips to the woodlot and back forty and the wildlife you see along the way. Fishing the stream down the road, swimming in the nearby lake after a hot day of haying!  That is what you get from a family hobby farm in Maine? Interested..how do your hands look? Need a few callouses?
