Face Masks

Years ago, in another career, I was given the opportunity to spend a month in Japan to further my education within the Japanese textile company I worked for. It was a wonderful experience and I was able to observe some of the ways this island culture interacted with each other.

Face MasksOne way was how people who were concerned about spreading germs or picking up germs, wore face masks. The masks were worn by people who were feeling under the weather, say with the onset of a cold or known flu. The wearer would use the mask in public and on the job, so they would not spread their germs to others.

To me this was a very thoughtful gesture.

The masks were probably worn also by healthy people, so they would not pick up germs while around others in public, or in close quarters with others, much like how healthy hospital workers do, when dealing with certain patients in a hospital setting.

Now that we are all in a new reality with this Covid-19 pandemic, the use of face masks has become an almost universal thing. Research will reveal the actual benefits of using cloth face masks. But for now, I will gladly wear a mask in public to hopefully not spread an unseen virus that has taken life and has changed life as we know it.

In the photos are a few cloth masks I have made before running out of elastic. We kept a few for ourselves and the others were mailed to family who live at a distance.

Please take care everyone.

Hi Gloria-I have heard the cloth ones are better than the paper kind. I would like the blue ones. Hope you are well.

Hi Gloria- what a very thoughtful thing to do for your family. I ordered a few from a local business who has turned their design business into making and selling masks.

Gloria Japan has always been a head of the curve... when it comes to food sanitation I have learned so much from our Japanese friends... now let's look at shacking hands an American tradition... Japanese bow and do not shake hands... what a new concept:))Endre

Hello Gloria - what a great opportunity you had for a month-long stay in another country.  You were able to hone your skills on perception(as well as perspective) in addition to so many other things.

Gloria that was a fabulous opportunity for you to live in Japan.  I have clients living there right now and it's fascinating to hear their stories.

I'm wondering if this virus will change the way we do things in the future. For example, I always thought it was somewhat odd to see folks flying with face masks, I'm guessing they figure we're odd for not wearing one.  And, perhaps shaking hands will be replace too...

In the future, I wouldn't be surprised if facemasks become more the norm than they are currently.  And, I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see some pretty clever designs as well.
