In an example of synergy, the name and concept of Earth Day was pioneered by John McConnell in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, while a separate Earth Day was created by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970.
While the first April 22 Earth Day was focused solely on the United States, a later organization launched by Denis Hayes, (the original national coordinator in 1970), took the concept of Earth Day global in 1990, and organized events in 141 nations.
Fifty years later, Earth Day takes a huge step forward with 24 hours of Earth Day Live on April 22, 2020 at https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-live/.
Earth Day 50 Live will include live audio and video messages and broadcasts from His Holiness Pope Francis, Science Guy Bill Nye, and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, among others, including performances by Ziggy Marley and Dave Matthews.
Due to constraints designed to slow the spread of the Coronavirus-19 aka SARS-2 pandemic, there will be no public gatherings for Earth Day 50 in 2020.
