As south Texas and Lousiana areas endure the coming devastation from Hurricane Laura, the aftermath will be a reality for many people. As real estate agents, these storms impact our clients, the homes we list and sell, and the current real estate market.
When the storm clears, the hard work begins. Years ago after the Houston area began the clean-up after Hurricane Ike, there were many challenges I was faced with along with my fellow Realtors. We had to get busy not only attending to our own homes and places of business but desperately worked to reach our clients and assist them in a variety of ways.
Most notably were the clients who called me in a panic who could not get back to their home yet needed someone to access the home and remove the spoiled food in the three refrigerators in their home. I knew it was time to get to work. My then-teenage son and I donned rubber gloves, masks, trash bags, and lots of Clorox, we successfully cleaned out those disgusting refrigerators that were bursting with putrid, swollen foods.
Truly, this was one of the grossest things I have ever done. We rolled up our sleeves and did what needed to be done. I can say, however, with full confidence - my fellow Realtors have done many selfless acts such as this over and over again. We do what needs to be done and more often than not, dive in to pick up the pieces over and above our duty to our clients.
As we face the coming devastation as the sun rises tomorrow, keep our fellow agents in your thoughts and prayers. They will be stepping up in ways you cannot imagine. Realtors are the silent heroes who jump in and do whatever it is to help rebuild our communities and neighborhoods.
We are praying for you all.
