Where's The ActiveRain Police When You Need Them?

For the last 2-3 weeks several of my older posts have been getting many "SPAM" comments. It's getting very frustrating because the Spam comments have URL's attached to them.

I keep reporting them and nothing happens ... So where are the AR police and or techies that delete reported Spam messages?

Believe it or not I have been getting 5 times more comments with Spam comments then comments from AR members. This is really bad and I relived about 20+ Spam comments day after day at two of my posts and ended up (deleting) the two posts ;o( ... Very Disappointing!

Is ActiveRain slowly falling appart???

I don't want Spam URL's attatched to my posts at ActiveRain. I don't have them at other networks, why here?

Home is where the hearth is.

If you click "report"... they remove reported spam.  If you have a specific problem with specific older posts (a common tactic for the alpha spammer)... let us know here... I'll tag ActiveRain Member Support and I'm sure they'll take care of it.

Meanwhile, It's probably not a bad idea to turn off comments on those old posts.

Bob, I'm cleaning out EVERY reported spam comment EVERY day multiple times a day.  Most of the spam commenters do not have ActiveRain profiles associated with them, so I can't do a "kill all" type approach.  It's one at a time as reported, and if they're not reported, I'm not going to see them.

As Alan suggested, it might be worthwhile to turn off nonmember comments to individual posts or all of your posts to shut down the spam commenters.

Thank you and  lately when I log into my account it's 30-40 comments from spammers ...

They have picked certain posts and keep going back to them repeatedly.  Have literally seen 5000+ spam comments dropped on posts from 2010 and 2011.

That is weird and the posts I am getting hit on are 2010 - 2011

Bob... I scrolled through your posts from 2010 and 2011, and I don't see any leftover spam... you must have already cleared any.

In the future, please feel free to report them, and we'll take care of that.

This has been happening to me also and I have a tip for you on this problem Endre ...

As your waitng and the 504 page comes up hit refresh on the top left hand corner. The AR page will show up again to log in with password etc.

Open up a new page on the top left, go to ActiveRain and you will see you are logged in and then deleted the repeat AR page

Hi Bob... fortunately, I've not been inundated with spam comments recently, but get the occasional one. Right now, I'm more concerned about my inability to log in for weeks at a time to post something to maybe get a comment or two!

Many of our AR members have encountered and complained about spam problems. Turning off non-member comments seems to be the best remedy.

Hi Robert Vegas Bob Swetz - I just posted this. right before coming to your post.

Hi Eileen Burns

I happened to have seen Curtis Van Carter post in another blog touting this blog. A couple of comments...

1. Nobody should be able to post anonymously.  Make it as difficult on the hackers as possible.  Most websites make the user follow a link to an email address.  Force 2-point authentication using a phone number.  I am sure this would help discourage hackers, especially low-level hackers.  I report every hacker comment I see.

When I started back in 2011, I had no idea that this was free.  I spent $49 a month on it.  It wasn't until the price dropped because I had reached 100,000 points that I did some investigating on the membership. I think that any new members should be given a limited "free" membership backed by a credit card and then start a monthly membership. Use the approach of other vendors that offer different tiers of membership benefits.  An example could be a limited number of posts at a reduced price, up to a "Pro" account with all the benefits.  As you reach different point values, the price is discounted and/or, moving up to the next tier at no additional cost eventually (500,000 points) moving to a free "Pro" account.

Hey Bob!  It's probably coming back because they stopped giving out points for reporting spam!  In the old days it didn't have a chance.
