19 Years After 9/11: Never Forget Those Who Sacrificed

September 11, 2001: Let Us Never Forget Those Who Sacrificed

19 years have passed since that horrific day on September 11th, 2001. Even after 19 years it always stuns me that I can still remember that day as if it was yesterday and not almost two decades ago. September 11th, 2001 is a day that fundamentally changed all of our livesEven though on 9/11 we knew our lives had changed, most likely forever, on that day we did not yet comprehend how much they would change. And many of those changes became the "new normal" for us. 9/11 is the Pearl Harbor of our generation.

Although it's been 19 years, when this day comes around, I find myself more emotional today and I was then... maybe because some of the shock of that day has worn off... so all that's left is emotion.

The memories of one of the darkest days in American history 19 years later remain crystal clear in my mind's eye. It still feels like yesterday that we were witnessing the events of September 11, 2001 unfold.  I still remember the first shock of seeing those plans hit the Towers. I still remember the fear that came with not being able to reach friends and family by phone (especially those who worked in or near the Twin Towers). I still remember getting through the day without a lot of emotion -- just shock -- and suddenly in the early evening tears began flowing down my face. Here we are, 19 years later, marking another anniversary of that tragic day. It feels like yesterday. And I think it will always feel like yesterday to me. And I doubt I will be less emotional on this day in the years to come.

One day 9/11 will become "ancient" history to future generations (already 20% of Americans have no memory of that day). But so long as those of us who lived through that day are around, WE MUST NEVER FORGET THOSE WHO SACRIFICED!   I for one know, I could never forget! And today, 19 years later, I am still tearful when I think of that day.

My Personal Relationship With The Twin Towers

I grew up in New York City and consider it my "home town."  I knew the Twin Towers well, having often walked through their doors for business meetings when I was working in the corporate world. Even before that, I remember watching those two towers get built. We celebrated my mother's 70th birthday in 1989 at Windows on the World on the top of the building. My husband and I had flown in from Paris, where we were living at the time, to surprise her. It was such a fun and happy evening, also never to be forgotten.

The first time I returned to NYC after the towers fell, driving in from the airport and crossing the Triboro Bridge was surreal... seeing the city skyline without the towers in the distance. I will never forget my shock coming out of the subway at the foot of the old World Trade Center and seeing a big hole in the ground instead the towers. No matter how many times I came out of that subway station in the following years, seeing that cavernous hole in the ground remained a shock to me.

Please Pause For A Moment Today:

Honor The Victims & The Courage Of The First Responders

To those many who lost a loved one that day, my heart and prayers go out to you. I know you suffered losses that can never be replaced. Today, on the 19th anniversary of 9/11, let's take a moment to remember all the heroes of that day -- both those who perished and those who survived. Let's make sure these deaths were not in vain.

As we honor the victims and the courage of the first responders, today is also a good day to take a moment today to reflect on the things that are most important in our lives and to remember that through tragedy we continue to have the opportunity to rise even stronger.

 LET US NEVER FORGET

"September 11 is one of our worst days, but it brought out the best in us. It unified us as a country and showed our charitable instincts and reminded us of what we stood for and stand for."

Senator Lamar Alexander

"September 11th impressed upon us that life is a precious gift... and I think we all have a duty to devote at least a small portion of our daily lives to ensuring that neither American nor the the world ever forgets September 11th."

Senator Bill Frist

"9/11 - a day to remember that extraordinary heroes are often disguised as ordinary people and that spirit and soul are unbreakable."

Stacey Alcorn

"Time is passing. Yet for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children."

President George W. Bush

LET US NEVER FORGET

LET'S ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THE PRICE OF FREEDOM IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE

and...

LET'S ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!

May God Bless Those Who Died, Their Families.

May God Bless America On This Anniversary And Every Day To Come!

Good morning Nina Hollander,

19 years ago when the terrorists struck our twin towers in NYC was indeed the equivalent  to the Pearl Harbor attack. I have never witnessed such a division in our country as now and we need to put our differences behind and become united again and stand as one for what our country represents. Thank you for the tribute today.

Nina,

Windows of the World is where I dined with a friend when my college scheduled a trip to the UN for an international political science class...The event left us speechless.  We were having breakfast at a restaurant we frequented in Yountville, (Napa valley) when someone came in and announced it.  He was worrried because his wife was in NY.  She was fine.  A

Hi Nina Hollander - it was surreal especially for those of us close by in NY.  Like you and others I fear the culture is causing us to forget.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... in the evenings you could dine and dance at Windows on the World... it was magical and I still remember that evening with total clarity. When I think back to it I'm also struck by the fact that I'm now older than my mother was when we celebrated her 70th birthday there. How did that happen?

It was a day of awaking for me Nina Hollander . Our generation had heard the stories of how EVIL walked the earth during the World Wars and even through the stories of the Bible as nation after nation tried to destroy God's people BUT on 911 our generation saw EVIL first hand. The brutal, unprovoked slaughter of innocent men, women and children delivered by the hand of Satan. While many died in the blink of an eye I can not imagine the terror they lived in that single blink of an eye. For those left behind the pain will never be erased in this mortal life time.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... I've never been able to fathom the terror those people experienced. The people who brought the plane down in Pennsylvania were also amazing heroes knowing they were falling to their deaths in protecting our nation. We don't recognize any of these people enough.

Hi Nina:

The memories of 19 years ago, the photos, and the videos, still bring tears to my eyes every year...and that’s a good thing. The feelings are hard to put into words, and that’s OK. I think everyone understands and deals with their memories in their own way. Thank you for a thoughtful post!

Jeff Dowler, CRS good morning, Jeff... I'll be the first to admit that every 9/11 I walk around all morning with tears in my eyes as I see the remembrances and the videos replaying the events of that day. It brings it all back so clearly. And you're so right... it's hard to find the words to express the sadness.

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning again, Endre... I feel as if 9-11 ushered in a new world war... this time a war against terrorism and it's continued for much longer than either of the last two world wars and probably will continue for years to come.
