Friday Fotos - The Eiffel Tower

Before my last trip to Paris, I read Paris, A Novel, part of a series of historical novels by Edward Rutherford.

Rutherford included a fascinating history of the iconic Eiffel Tower.

There were a group of men who had installed the elevator, and they happened to be in the city during World War II, when the city was occupied by the Nazis.  When they heard that Hitler was paying a visit to their beloved landmark, and he sort of wanted to install a Paris office on the platform on the top floor, they decided that wasn't going to happen.

These gutsy old guys wanted to stop him without permanently harming the monument. So they snuck in during the middlle of the night and sabatoged the elevator.  If the Furer wanted to get the best view in Paris during his visit, they wanted to make sure he would have to walk to the top.  And that would be a whole lot of steps, which Hitler declined to climb.  He had to just stand at the foot and look up.

I took this picture on my old iPhone while on the elevator headed for the top of the tower.

No doubt about it!  This is one of the world's coolest views!

Great story, Patricia, which I was familiar with. Temporarily lived virtually across the road from the Eiffel Tower. Never tired of seeing it.

I am glad that Hitler didn't get the view he wanted, it sounds like he was a lazy man, haha.

Hi Patricia Kennedy - I wasn't aware that Hitler had even come back to Paris after the original time.  Interesting piece of history.

Patricia,

What a great historical tidbit!  And the picture is wonderful. Gazing at it, I felt like I was there. A

Lynda, I spent my 75th there, and stayed in a condo on the Seine - I wanted to buy it!  Anyway, it's a great play to be if you want to resist feeling old!

Endre, well, there are bunches of wonderful places to eat in Paris - and I'm hoping they survive the pandemic.

The Grand Canyon is beautiful indeed, but I don't think any men can take credit for building it!

Myrl, it was a very long and wonderul book, and the tower stories, both building it and saving it, were my favorites.

Brian, I'm glad that Hitler could only crane his neck and feel pissed off!  But I don't think that, even on my best day, I would have attempted that climb!

Kat, it's an amazing, and totally unobstructed view that seems to go on forever.

Grant, I think his trip to Paris was very soon after the occupation began.  He thought the French were a bunch of erudite snobs, and couldn't wait to get his hands on their art - and their wine.  The wine is the topic of another great book.

Patricia that is a looooong way up.  I think I would have declined to climb all those steps as well.

Hi Pat:

Great story!!

I've on;y been up the Eiffel Town once, despite a number of visits to Paris. We were there when the sun was setting and all the lights were coming on - it was an incredible view.

It’s one of those majestic things that you think is overhyped a little bit but it never matches up to what you think it will be and it’s much much cooler!

Laura, I've been going to Paris since the 60's.  This was my first trip to the top of the tower, and I only went because the friend I was travelling with insisted that we had to go all the way up!
