New Housing Permits, Starts, & Completions August 2020

On September 17, 2020, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits down 0.9% to 1,470,000 units in August of 2020 from 1,483,000 units in July of 2020, and lower 0.1% from 1,471,000 in August of 2019. Single family building permits rose 6.0% to a rate of 1,033,000 units in August of 2020, from 977,000 units in July of 2020, and there were 381000 multifamily building permits issued in August of 2020.

Nationwide housing starts decreased 5.1% to 1,416,000 units in August of 2020, from 1,492,000 units in July of 2020 but higher 2.8% from 1,377,000 units in August of 2019. Single family starts gained 4.1% to a rate of 1,021,000 units in August of 2020 from 981,000 in July of 2020, and there were 375,000 multifamily building starts in August of 2020.

Nationwide housing completions fell 7.5% to 1,233,000 units in August of 2020 from 1,333,000 units in July of 2020, and declined 2.4% from 1,263,000 units in August of 2019. Single family completions dropped 4.4% to a rate of 912,000 units in August of 2020, from 954,000 units in July of 2020, and there were 312,000 multifamily completions in August of 2020.
