Every so often a song comes along with melody that you never forget. One of those songs is The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals.
The song is an adaption of old classic folk ballad that may go back as far as the17th century. The song was recorded by dozens of artists including Woody Gutherie, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Eric Burdon heard a version of the song and decided that The Animals could use something with a more distinctive sound. The band was on tour and began to play their version on stage. It was so well received they decide to record the song.
The original version was over 4 minutes long. The song was too long for most radio station’s, so they recorded a shortened version. The shorter version was a hit in the U. S. where it became the first British Invasion song that was not a Beatle record to hit number one.
It has been ranked number 122 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Rock Songs of All Time. It also received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award and one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.
