Today Was Almost Perfect…That is for a “Perfect Storm” of a Disaster.

Minimal rainfall, Santa Ana winds, high heat , and low humidity all add up to a prescription for a potential disaster. Today was expected to be a beautiful day in Southern Cal. My plans included a bike ride at the beach after church and a little mid-day business.

After loading 2 bikes in my truck I headed for services at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove Ca. I'm a member and a volunteer at the East door as a greeter,..interning for my eventual retirement job as a greeter at the local Wal-Mart, according to my daughter.

The radio news mentioned a brush fire near the toll road in the Orange County community of Anaheim Hills. Not to be confused with the area of Anaheim the home of Disneyland, this bedroom community (although actually part of the City of Anaheim) is a bedroom community in the rolling hills of eastern OC.  The news, while obviously not good, was yet not all that uncommon with Santa Ana hot (offshore) winds blowing from the desert and mountains every now and then.

During the service (at the CC) winds kept us from keeping doors wide open. Immediately after church heading (east) to the 57 freeway at the Big-A (Angels Stadium) and the Anaheim Pond (Ducks) I couldn't help seeing huge plumes of smoke in the distance ahead.  My plans included first, previewing an open house for a client.

Soon, while sitting as a red light (just off the freeway) a group of fire trucks, sirens blaring passed us by, afterwards I made a u-turn and decided to go the opposite direction back to the freeway.  Next, dropping off a bike to a friend, I was passed again by a caravan of fire trucks including crew transports this time. Photos were taken sitting at the light.

Seeing the faces of the young fire fighters hurried by, riding in crew trucks placed a whole new face on the situation for me. This was far more than just a brush fire, erratic winds forced the fire to the west, heading towards thousands of homes.

  • As that happened, faces of friends flashed before my face:
  • What about Andrew and Kathleen, buyers who invited me to dinner not long ago (after closing) in their beautiful east Anaheim Hills home
  • What about my friend Dale,he lives in East Anaheim Hills, also a fellow rainer and Realtor.
  • And while waiting for a counter offer today,  I thought...is that why I haven't heard yet?  The agents are a family team who also live in the  area, (forget about business) are things o.k. with them?

Business can always wait. It's all the people you think about that are really important, right?  I can't even imagine what it must be like to experience the devastation of Katrina or the most recent tornados in Al.  My heart goes out to all of you.

Last Update:  Now it appears that winds may be dying down and the fire is heading to the open hillside area (yes we still have some, yet not nearly enough in the OC.) and hopefully not threatening homes.  Tomorrow is another day of high winds and hight temps.

No doubt, we all have lot's to be grateful for, right?

Hi Beth,

Thank you for the thoughtful message.  And like you, I too have confidence in the hard working individuals who are our fire fighters.  We all have trade-offs, I guess depending on where ever we live, right?

Thanks again!

Lynda,

The closest I've ever come to the Santa Ana winds was thru the music of Steely Dan... Must be tough living with the constant thought of pending disaster when the fires start up.

Lynda,

Living with those winds and fires must be truly daunting.  Here in Hilton Head, we worry about hurricanes although we haven't seen one here in 101 years.  Hope it stays that way.

Hi Lynda:

Scary stuff. I wasn't here at the time, but every time I hear about fires I remember the devastation in the San Diego area from several years ago. So easy to forget that many live with the threat of these fires most of the time. ope the hot weather predicted for the next couple of days does not make things worse.

Hi Lynda - I grew up in Anaheim (for 18+ years) and love that I can still picture all of the streets and places that you mentioned.  (I even attended CC for 10+ years!).

When we heard about the "Orange County" fire on the news yesterday, it didn't even mention a city - just Orange County.  I thought perhaps I had missed something or was I experiencing memory loss?  Thank you for the pictures and for sharing.  I'll definitely be calling upon some old friends today.

P.S.  We experience fires here in Arizona every year - the dry heat and human error are a deadly combination.  Our family continually prays for our firefighters and community volunteers.

I live on the east coast in the Live Free or Die state, NH and watch these news clips on TV and cannot in my wildest dreams imagine being there.  Hurricains are the disaster storms here and I've lived thru 4 or 5 that were scary .  My back yard is the Atlantic Ocean which is ever changing depending on the weather.  My heart goes out to anyone who has lost there homes, belongings, lives in any disaster.  God Bless them!

I used to work for Hughes Aircraft, located at that time in Anaheim Hills off of Imperial.  My first thoughts were with friends that live in the area.  The good news - they are all ok.

Dan,Santa Ana's happen here a lot, they usually just dry everything up, but every now and then it can be serious.

Diane, Hilton Head, I've heard it's beautiful, I hope to see your area some day.

Jeff, you are absolutely correct.  Fires in your area were absolutely devastating, I remember watching on TV, it was heart breaking and unexpected for a coastal area. You live in an absolutely beautiful area.  See you soon in Irvine.

Calle, an OC girl at one time? Next time you're back here, come by the CC at the east door and say hello.

Patricia, the Atlantic, now that would be amazing to me.

Roger, yesterday I was sitting at a signal on Imperial when the first group of fire trucks went by.  That's when I decided to turn around and head the other way.  And it appears it was good news for most all.  The fire fighters did an amazing job saving the endangered homes.

Hi Lyda,  I totally agree that friends and family are the most important of all the things in our lives.  I, like you, many times have thought about friends and family during traumatic events or other things that take place that shake me a little.  I often will wonder about these people and how they are.  In the big picture, everything we work for, our homes, businesses, posessions, etc. don't seem to have much value when there is the possibilty of someone we care about or love may be in danger.  Great post Lynda and something we all needed to hear.

Lynda, this is scary.  I hope the fire will be extinguished soon without much damage.  This reminds me of how vulnerable I feel whenever we have a hurricane heading our way.  And how everyone's safety is the only thing that really matters.

I liked your line about interning for Walmart.  cute.

Hi Lynda- I think it's hard for people who don't live in CA to understand the devastation these fires leave behind.. We know that this is only the start of what will be a bad season unless we get more rain this month.. The fires destroy all ground cover ... then if we get a heavy storm season later we will have a flooding problem.. I have friends who lost almost their whole ranch in the Julian fire and they are very concerned about this year..

Hi again,

George you are absolutely right.  Last year FIVE fire fighters also lost their lives fighting a fire in So-Cal,  it was a tragic loss for everyone.

Sweet Maggie, thanks for stopping by.  Guess we all live with something, right?  Did I read somewhere along the way you are taking your broker's exam?

Kay, I can certainly see why your friends are so concerned.  We've had so little rain up to this point. Today the temp is in the low 90's and they said humidity was at 4%. Julien is such a picturesque area!

Lynda, I took it this morning and passed it!  I got a 100!  That's a lie about the 100. he he We're only told our score if we fail it.  So our instructor said "who's to say you didn't get 100?"  I doubt I really did, but I like to think so!

Oh yeah, it's my birthday.  It's my birthday.  <<doing a funny dance>>  Thanks for asking about it!

Hi Lynda. Great photos. I took some spectacular ones a 3-4 years ago when Rancho Santa Margarita, Las Flores, Wagon Wheel and Coto de Caza were burning...too bad I wasn't on AR then!  Yesterday I had an open house in Irvine...just downwind from Anaheim Hill. I'm trying to figure out if my headache is allergies from SA winds or from the lovely thick brown air from yesterday and today. I always feel for the AH residents because this seems to happen to them on a regular basis.  I guess no more so than the problems in Laguna, Santa Monica or Santa Clarita - but the cycle of dry, wind, fire...wet, flood, landslide must get a bit old!

Hi Kelly, yep, that wind carried the smoke everywhere. My friends here in Brea today had ash in their pool and we weren't even in the wind direction of the fire.

Bob, fortunately I think everyone is o.k.

And sweet Maggie,   And congratulations on your broker's license!

Lynda, thanks!  I was just doing that silly birthday dance.  My birthday's not 'til September.  And at my age, I'd rather celebrate it every other year anyway =)  What's the update on the fire?  Has it been put out?

Lynda,

I am a Ventura County Native and have experienced and witnessed several of these fires. I have seen my neighbors home burned to the ground while my parents home did not get touched (in the fire my neighbors wife died). I have helped in the ojai fires of the 80's and seen several others. The fear and uncertainty can not be explained but I do know that if we leave these with our health everything else can be replacs! I am sorruy for anyone who experiences any disaster.
