As the world recovers from COVID-19 and herd immunity increases, more people plan to vacation away from Santa Clara County.
To prevent a Silicon Valley home from attracting the attention of thieves due to a pile-up of newspapers, it's wise to arrange a vacation hold.
Here is a quick tutorial on how to stop and start the local San Jose Mercury Newspaper subscription service.
While the Mercury prefers customers to use the Internet system, it is possible to accomplish a vacation hold through their new customer service number at 408-508-5554. That outgoing message offers "vacation hold" as one of the options-try pressing 2 to connect.
The system will ask for the phone number connected to the account and, once confirmed, will then verify the street number of the delivery address. Callers will be given an option to receive credit for the hold period or to donate that credit to local schools and organizations.
For the online Internet system, first go to www.mercurynews.com (the newspaper of Silicon Valley). Click eSubscriber or subscriber services, to get to https://www.subscriberconcierge.com/sanjose/. A nice lady then begins talking. (If, like me, one prefers quiet, just silence her off by clicking the rightmost X under her image.)
At the top are three buttons. Choose the rightmost button "Vacation Hold" and click to the following message:
