Tufts University currently enrolls about 12,000 undergrad students, of which 35% live off-campus according to US News.  This creates a big demand for apartments near Tufts University, more specifically in the neighborhoods closest to campus. 

Tufts is located on the border between Medford, MA and Somerville, roughly 10 miles north of the City of Boston.  Students enjoy close access to the City in a quieter suburban setting, and rent prices can vary heavily depending on the neighborhood you choose to call home.  Here’s what it will cost you to rent an apartment in 5 of the most popular neighborhoods for Tufts students. 

 

1.  Somerville apartments

Demand for apartments in Somerville has been growing in recent years, and it is considered to be one of the best suburbs to live in Greater Boston given its proximity to the City and its variety of cultural offerings.  As a result, rent prices are higher in Somerville than other Boston suburbs.  It is currently the 3rd most expensive suburb to rent a 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartment in Boston.

2.  Medford apartments

Medford is home to Tufts University, so as you can imagine, it’s home to many of the students enrolled at Tufts.  It is also one of the more affordable suburbs to rent an apartment, making it popular for undergrads on a budget.  Out of the 14 suburbs closest to Boston, it has the 7th highest price for 2 bedroom apartments and the lowest price for 1 bedroom apartments.

3.  Cambridge apartments

Cambridge is famous for being the home of Harvard University and MIT, but it also known to be a popular enclave for Tufts students.  It offers residents beautiful architecture, endless shopping and dining options, and close proximity in Boston, making it one of the best places to live in the Metro area if you can afford it.  Cambridge is the most expensive suburb to rent a 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, 3 bedroom, and 4 bedroom apartment.

4.  Malden apartments

On the opposite side of the price spectrum, we have Malden.  Situated just East of Medford, Tufts students living in Malden enjoy a short commute of just a few miles and close access to the city.  They also enjoy a much quieter and serene environment, as Malden is home to many beautiful parks and recreation areas.  It’s also much more economical in terms of rent prices than the others.  Malden is the 4th most affordable suburb for 1 bedroom apartments, and the second most affordable suburb for 2 bedroom apartments.

5.  Arlington apartments

Located just west of Medford is Arlington, another suburb that offers undergrads from Tufts another great housing option within a few miles of Tufts campus.  Arlington is the 6th most expensive neighborhood for 1 bedroom apartments and the 7th most expensive for 3 bedroom apartments.
