Tile work: Mediterranean Influence reigns in Santa Barbara!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

One of the many aspects of the architecture that is dominant in Santa Barbara and its environs is the tile work.  Pictured above is a small tile bench situated near a door.

Part of it appeal is the contrast of the terra cotta floor tile, which emphasizes the beauty of the tile.  It is part of the Mediterranean architecture and the Spanish influence which is prominent in our area along with the terra cotta tile roofs.

One of our friends brought home painted Italian tile to integrate into their outdoor kitchen.  What they didn't take into account you don't have to worry about in your area:  Ohio winters.   The tile didn't fare so well.

Liz and Bill Spear , I gather they did not think of sealing the tile.  Outdoor tiles even here in our mild climate are sealed.  We had those same floor tiles at our home in Los Angeles, and they were sealed before laying them and after laying them.  A true outdoor tile is glazed heavily to withstand weaather.  A

My suspicion is they bought decorative tiles meant to be indoor.  I don't know if they sealed them, but they definitely shattered after being in the cold.

That vibrant blue really does catch the eye, Ron and Alexandra, very much has a nautical feel. The tile reminds me of sand and is beachy.

Hi Ron and Alexandra - we see much of that in Florida too.  The spanish influence in homes is seen in other parts of the southwest.

I always enjoy seeing diversity in styles even when they aren't quite my style, unless it is a mix of styles that contrast with each other, haha.

Good morning, Alexandra... I've always had a weakness for Mediterranean influences even though I've never lived anywhere where it was prevalent.

It is the Early California influence often found in Santa Barbara that makes it so charming!

I am drawn to tile, no matter where it is. I bet it's difficult to get the tile to curve around the edges...
