Larchmont and Mamaroneck Merger?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner

Larchmont is a Village in the Town of Mamaroneck.  They both have separates sevices and pay taxes for them.  Larchmont is a small Village in lower Westchester County with under 7000 people and is about a square mile.  It is part of the Mamaroneck School District.  With soaring taxes in Westchester County it would make sense to consolidate some of the services offered.

Right now Larchmont shares a library, garbage collection, recycling and property assessment.  Larchmont is self governed.  Larchmont has it's own police and fire department, public works and courts.

One of the trustess of the Village of Larchmont, Jim Millstein, has run the numbers and believes a consolidation or some other form of merger would taxpayers from paying duplicate taxes.

There are other areas throughout Westchester County that if they are not thinking along these lines probably should.  With rising gas price, home heating costs any relief on taxes for our homeowners is a good thing.

Both such lovely towns.  Each of these towns has great advantages.  Anything to save taxes in NY would be such a good thing.  NYers get taxed to death as it is now.

Miriam, as a one-time Scarsdalian, your title caught my eye.  The idea sounds quite sensible, what with the soaring costs these days.

To assume a merger of services would eliminate the taxpayer cost of the service is the real question. Would merging a police or fire department affect my home's value? Tell a homebuyer we used to have our own services but not any more would not be a selling point. Like a larger department would provide the personal service we've grown accustomed to! Not a new story, just a different day

VLR, how about saying I live in a community that cares about it's residents, they studied a merger and determined that services would not be compromised and so we share services with Mamaroneck.

I would buy in such a community, it's all in the presentation.

They've studied this for decades; specualte is all one can do about compromising services. Police and Fire headquarters a stone's throw away from my house...or in another geographic town. If sacrificing response time is not considered a compromise, I guess your right. And those like myself,  who see this as a compromise,  have looked at the studies for years and continue to make  the right decision. Garbage collection is one thing, personal safety another. Thanks, I'll keep my services.

VLR I can see you feel strongly about this.  I live in the unincorporated area of Hartsdale.  My police department is the Town of Greenburgh police department.  They are wonderful and respond immediately if there is a problem.  They are out patrolling all day long throughout the community and are always a moments away.  Your argument is not valid.  Also the department is large enough that there is always coverage.  They do not sit in their headquarters waiting to be called, is that what they do in Larchmont?

Pardon my correcting that my argument is not valid. Let me clarify what you question about the officers sitting around to be called: taking my children to the Chatsworth Avenue School September to June  the officers here are around the school protecting children and drivers alike at drop-off, pick-up, and throughout the day. When not these times their presence is in all other areas of the village. Their response is prompt and curteous. I assure you, when they arrested the bank robber last summer they weren't sitting in headquarters waiting for that hostage taking louse to strike.
