Here's the Flower Mound Scoop for Monday 1/3/2022

Temperatures in Flower Mound took a dive from the pleasant 80s down to 18 degrees yesterday. As the sun shines temperatures are now up to 41 degrees as of 11:10 a.m. Pansies were pretty while they lasted. Some may survive! Let's keep the corners of our mouths up!

Unleaded gas prices on December 30, 2021, was higher than a year ago but still under $3.00 a gallon in Flower Mound.

Highland Home New Construction is doing well. It's amazing what they do in about a month's time even when there are holidays. This photo was taken before Thanksgiving. In January 2022 the windows are in, sheetrock is up, electrical and water is in, and there are so many trucks parked out front I couldn't get a photograph. They already put up the drywall and will be working on tile and wood floors. Behind the big trucks and closed doors, they are working hard in Oak Point,

Is it time for you to have your vision checked? Texas A&M University of College of Medicine is studying the effect of long-term spaceflight on the eyes and on the arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels that serve NASA Astronauts as they prepare for their mission spending at least 1 1/2 years in space. Did you know that most astronauts who previously returned from space have about a month's time of impaired vision?

With the weather being unpredictable over many parts of the United States it pays to take precautions for safety when it comes to Carbon Monoxide and fires:

DON'T

  •  Use an open gas oven to heat a home - the fumes, including carbon monoxide, could escape into the home. If you think you're safer with an electric stove, think again. If the power goes out, you don't get to cook with your electric stove.

  • Bring a gas or charcoal grill into the home or garage - the fumes will contain carbon monoxide. Back in the late 1980's my Professor from the College of Lake County in Grayslake, IL, did that and there was an explosion. She was severely burned but did recover with time. She was lucky!

  • Start a car with the garage door closed - the exhaust will contain dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. If your water heater is located inside the garage and you recently had roof repairs, make sure the pipe is attached. Mine wasn't. Thankfully, I noticed and called a Plumber before the temperatures dropped.

  • Put a gas-or diesel-powered generator inside a home or garage or near a window.

DO

  • Change the batteries on your carbon monoxide detector once a year.

  • Replace your carbon monoxide detector every 5 - 7 years. If you have children or value your life, don't wait before the 7th year.

  • Have your gas appliances inspected once a year by a trained professional to ensure the exhaust system is working properly and make sure your fireplace is cleaned and the flue damper is working before you start a wood burning fire.

  • Place gas- or diesel-powered generators 20 feet from your home when in use.

  • REMEMBER CARBON MONOXIDE IS CALLED THE SILENT KILLER

As plant life goes dormant during winter in most parts of the country, keep hydrated, eat well, exercise body, mind, and soul. I noticed too many empty seats in church at Midnight Mass and on New Year's Day. Spirituality and creativity are akin. People are deeply rooted no matter what the weather is doing. Oh my, what an incredible drop in temperature you had. We were low 60's yesterday (very unusual for this time of the year) and today we're at 31.  Your gas prices are much more reasonable than ours, which is currently at an average of $3.45!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - I never heard of temperatures dropping that greatly before either. It was a big surprise. My temperatures have now climbed to 53 degrees right now at 2:11 PM and compared to the weekend, it feels warm. I hope you are doing well in Long Island and staying warm too. It is always good to communicate with you here on ActiveRain. Have a nice day!
