Remember Mr. Green Jeans? Captain Kangaroo was my favorite as a kid--and Mr. Green Jeans has to be one of my heroes! Small wonder, then, that something like this should make my boat float:
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio has appointed a 'Green Officer'--Thom Snelling, the city's director for growth management and development services is also now the city's own "Mr. Green Jeans", and according to the Time's staff writer, Emily Nipps: "he's up to his eyeballs in it."
I guess it's a good thing we're not talking organic here, just green...
There's an interesting list of things Tampa has already done to the 'green', such as the Police Department being built on brownfield with recylcled materials, not to mention low-flow fixtures and led lights, but you can check it out for yourself here.
Thom himself admits to being a long-time gardener, using such tried-and-true methods as composting and rainbarrels, and says: "It's the little things that make a difference. You don't have to be this crusading, Mother Jones kind of person. You do simple things like following watering restrictions. Change your light bulbs from standard to CFL. Don't litter. That's old-school stuff."
And THAT, is green enough for me!
