Highlands County is Dancing in the Rain

Highlands County is dancing in the Rain.

I didn't keep tabs on how many inches of rain Highlands County received last summer but earlier this year it was evident that our lakes are running dry. By dry I mean, every lake in Highlands County has now its own beach. You'll find people sunbathing, building sand castles, putting up umbrellas......We saw "It's a Draught! Conserve Water!" signs going up faster than real estate signs. Of course, hardly anyone conserved water. Sprinklers were running on schedule, folks were washing their cars just as frequently.

I showed a lake front home a few weeks ago. Not only was the water level too low to launch a boat from the docks, it was too low to even touch the docks. There I was, trying to sell lake front property without a lake. No, my client didn't buy the home.

Something has changed lately though. It started to rain. At least once a day. Mother Nature gives an impressive show of puffy grey clouds and vivid thunderbolts.

I live close to the county line to Polk County and it seems that Frostproof has been getting most of the good thunderstorms last year. Their lakes aren't dry! Well, this summer Highlands County is finally getting its share of daily rains along with thunderstorms and a nice power outage here and there. Our lawn is green, our pool filled to the brim and I don't remember the last time I actually had to water the tomatoes.

Life is good.....for now!
