Green Product - Recycled Glass Countertops

By
Real Estate Agent with Irongate Inc. REALTORS SAL.2006006317

Many buyers today are searching for homes with green products. Recycled glass countertops are the best of both worlds - the granite look and durability with an eco-friendly material. Unlike granite, which is a non-renewable resource, recycled glass countertops are made from glass that cannot be recycled elsewhere. Some sources of the recycled glass are windshields, used glass bottles, and plate glass windows. Unlike marble, recycled glass countertops are also nonporous. Look for this green product to gain popularity in homes and even help a home to sell quickly using green advertising!

This is a great product, When remodeling our home we checked out lots of surfaces. Ended up with concrete (love it) but I liked this as well.

This sounds really neat!  Is it rough or smooth?  And can you pick the colors?

I like those! I haven't seen them yet. Is the surface smooth like granite?

You could make your kitchen any color :)

These are beautiful!  This kind of conglomerate material has been around for quite a while and is called "terrazzo."  It's a stroke of brilliance to focus the industry on recycling those special kinds of glass that we can't normally reprocess.

When I was very young, my parents had a small coffee table that was made of this terrazzo material - wonder what they did with it!  Imagine a cool white nougat-like slab with clear bits of glass embedded in it, except for a central lengthwise wide "river" of bigger bits of glass in different blues.  It was gorgeous and I wish I had it in my house today.  It was quite the work of art.

Christina, wanted to write about the glass countertops, and that I can't imagine how they look and fee, but the comment before me left me nearly speechless. (LOL)

John is correct. The product pictured is our GlassSLAB application that is made for countertops. We have a line of recycled glass products that serve as flooring along with a decor line that allows the customer to create anything from table tops to fire place applications.

Our products are made from 100% recycled glass, mirror, porclein and mother of pearl with a custom color resin base. GLASS RECYCLED's products are compared to granite in almost all aspects. Our completely custom process is what draws in designers and home owners.

We recently opened up a new showroom in Dallas, TX on Irving Blvd. Go to www.glassrecycled.com for more information.

I have checked the prices of recyled glass counter tops and they are not any cheaper than granite.  Sometimes they are more expensive.

How is it NOT porous. They must have to use some kind of epoxy to fuse it all together which must break down with cleaning products. I would also guess glass isn't good to put a hot pot or dish down on. Granite can take that, and I love that I can put a hot cookie sheet or three on it!

LOVE this glass look, though!!! Saw it on This Old House in the South Boston Duplex for the aunt and niece - which was really beachy/coastal looking.
