The most stressful dilemma customers face when choosing colors for their interior painting project is visualizing what that "tiny swatch of paint" will look like on their walls. Most customers understand that the color swatch sample on the color wheel will look different once it is actually on the walls of their home. Many variables contribute to this perceived difference such as the paint product type, the paint sheen, and the lighting in the room. The best way to know for sure what a color will look like on your walls is to paint small areas of the walls with:
- The proposed paint product, such as Duration Home, Cashmere, or Regal
- The proposed paint sheen, such as Matte or Low Luster
- The proposed color choice
After doing so, view the walls in the day, in natural light and in the evening, in artificial light. Take note of how the colors may appear to change slightly just based on the amount and type of lighting in the room at different times of the day.
While the above process will give you the best perspective of what your color choices will look like in your home, it is not an inexpensive method for getting a feel for the colors. The cost of buying gallons or quarts of premium paints such as Duration Home, Cashmere, or Regal can quickly become very expensive if you try multiple colors. A more cost effective option is available that will give you a "ballpark" feel for what the colors will look like in your home.
Sherwin-Williams stores sell "Color To Go." "Color To Go" samples come in Twist-n-Pour containers that cover approximately 75 sq. ft. of wall space. This will allow you to cover enough of the wall to get a very good feel of what the color will look like in your home. The "Color To Go" samples are a much more economical option to buying premium paints for samples. Each sample color will cost between $5 and $7 depending on market pricing.
With "Color To Go" you are able to:
- Experiment with color on the actual surface where it will be applied.
- Better assess the color in the environment where it will be used.
- Determine how lighting and other elements will affect the color and feel of the room.
- Take the guesswork out of choosing the right color.
Now for the caveat. A Finishing Touch Painters suggests using the "Color To Go" option only when you are looking for an affordable, "ballpark," feel of what the color will look like in your home. Keep in mind that you are not using the actual premium paint product or sheen that will eventually be applied on walls with the premium paints such as Duration Home, Cashmere, or Regal. Once those premium paints, in the selected sheens, are applied to your walls, they may vary slightly from the "ballpark" color you saw with the "Color To Go" sample. We mention this caveat because there almost always is a slight difference.
