THE MEDIA NEEDS TO CHANGE IT'S DIRECTION

By
Real Estate Agent with Johnson Real Estate, Inc. RES.0761759

Everyone who is in real estate or tracks how the market is doing knows that it hasn't been doing well for the last few years.

However, recently certain parts of the country have seen a turn and are focusing on the positive.  Even NAR has had commericals on TV saying that this is the time to buy.  So why is the media gravitating to the negative and always puting a down turn on the market.  Isn't this perception keeping us in the dark, and not trying to move us forward?

Here is a recent article on MSNBC stating this.  I think that all people should start thinking for themselves and not totally rely on the media for the whole truth.  They are only projecting on side.. not the total picture.  If we are to come out of this slump, we (the public) need to become assertive and think outside the box.

Well, I guess it's all relative.  I'm 58 and my dad is 78 and I had him and my mom over for dinner last night and for some reason my dad started talking about how bad things were when he was a kid during the depression.  He said he was very young, but his dad (my grandfather) was a carpenter and couldn't find steady work and that the family of 4 siblings had to buy food necessities at a local grocery store on credit.  He said about about 5 years that my grandfather had to deed over his house to the grocer to pay the food bill for those 5 years which was agreed on in advance.

WOW...talk about ROUGH!  Makes me feel ashame to complain about anything!  So whatever anyone is complaining about...it's all relative.

Bobby, I think as a whole humans gravitate to the bad, depressing situations.  I for one want to change this, if nothing else, about me.  It is too draining to hold on to the negative.

Heath... Thanks for this group.  I checked it out and joined.  By the way, I was in East Falmouth this weekend on Narransette Street.  Love being near the water.

George.. I realize with the election coming up, the media takes that slant... but they ALWAYS take the negative slant on things to sell papers.  That is why I don't buy it.  Plus this way, I can say I am trying to save a tree, and go green.

Steve, I agree with you, but how do we as realtors work around this?  How do we get the word out there that it ISN'T all doom and gloom in real estate?

DeVerie, Can you find that report and add it to a comment here on this blog?  I think we all need to see that the market isn't as bad as it is made out to be.

David.. I couldn't agree with you more.  I just realized it is like karma.  If you do bad things, bad things happen to you.  Do good things, good will come back to you.  So why don't we think good thoughts about real estate, and good things will happen.  Good brings Good.

Debi.. That is my thought on this as well.  As I mentioned to David (above), good brings in good, bad brings in bad.  There is ENOUGH bad.. let's bring in the good.

David.. You are right, things are relative.  You story about your grandfather, actually brightens my day.  Things in my life aren't that bad... so why should I complain.

I get frustrated when my market area gets lumped in with Greater Orlando for the negative reports. It is not the same.

JoEllen.. This is why I think people should start thinking and investigating on their own, and not relying totally on the media for the information.

Valerie-

As Realtors we all have a duty to challenge the negative media about their stories.  You need to study the facts of your local market, find the nuggets of good, and start calling talk radio shows and writing letters to the editor on an on-going basis.

If we don't push back and call the media out, nothing will change.

Tim..I fully agree.  My question.. isn't it the duty of the media to report *actuate* news?  LOL.  I know they do.. but they exploit it.  I truly believe this country would be in such a devastated situation if it weren't for the media harping on the negativity.

Valerie-

The threshold of the media to report hard news went out the window a long time ago.  Today's media think's their duty is to generate revenues without regard to the facts.

I spent 20 years in the media working in magazine, newspaper, and book publishing.  When I started there was a clear difference between the publishing side and the editorial side of the business.  Over time the lines blurred and we have the new media of today.  The sick reality is that bad news sells and if consumers (you and me) voted with our wallets it would change.

Do you know what the largest circulation magazines are today?  People Magazine, National Enquirer, and the Star.  Sales will vary widely with each issue.  The editors pray for bad news with a special emphasis on death and destruction.  The People Magazine issue featuring Lady Di's death was the largest selling issue ever.  When bad news isn't happening editors of today will manufacture and spin the news with a negative slant to sell more product or get more ratings.

I host a weekly radio show about real estate.  It is the glass half full version on the news.  Recently, the station management suggested I create more controversy on the show because that is what listeners want.  Listeners don't want the good news with feel-good stories--they want bad news and controversy.

That is the reality and only consumers of news can change it.  The media are giving you what you want.

Tim... Thank you for your comment.. I found it very informative.    What has happened to our society?  Why do people gravitate to bad news... does it make our lives better?  What happened to compassion?  I don't see how people can even read magazines like the National Enquirer.. it is SOOO far fetched.  The only one I give particle hope to is People.. In all honesty, I haven't bought People in years and only read it while waiting in line.

I remember People Magazine featuring Lady Di's Death.. I couldn't believe how it was publicized all over the place?  To inform is one thing.. to exploit is another.

If newspapers and magazine only publish *bad/devastating* news for the public to read.. what other choice do we have?  If good news no one pays heed to.. and bad news sell.. it is disgusting.

Valerie,

I think that the public needs to tune out this kind of rubbish.  Until that happens, the media won't change.  The other thing we can do is to confront them and set the record straight at least on our little corner of the world.  You inspired me to write the following post:

We all need to be proactive and confront the press when we know they are wrong.

Val, I just wrote a blog about the other financial gurus getting in on real estate bashing, we are the brunt of all the woes. What is the NAR doing to stem this bad publicity?

Steve.. It is too bad people in general can't get out of their own way.  Realtors are always get the bashing... we should some how be able to turn the tables back onto the media, and the other appropriate sources.
